To cancel Get Covered NJ, log into your account at the Get Covered NJ portal, open “My Enrollment,” and terminate your plan — or call the Customer Call Center at 1-833-677-1010 (TTY: 711). Both routes work the same way, but a few things around the cancellation matter as much as the click itself: the end date you choose, whether you’re lining up new coverage, and what you’ll owe at tax time.
Cancel Online Through Your Account
Sign in at the Get Covered NJ portal and go to “My Enrollment” to see your active plan. Select the option to terminate coverage. The system asks for a termination date and a reason, such as gaining employer coverage, enrolling in Medicare, or moving out of state. Read the confirmation screen before you submit. Once you terminate outside of open enrollment, you generally cannot re-enroll unless a qualifying life event opens a Special Enrollment Period.1GetCoveredNJ. GetCoveredNJ – Frequently Asked Questions
Have your Marketplace Member ID ready. It’s on your eligibility notice and your insurance card. You’ll also need Social Security numbers for anyone being removed from the plan.

Phone is the better choice when you need a specific end date, when you’re removing the primary account holder, or when your situation doesn’t fit neatly into the online form’s options.
Choosing Your Termination Date
If you’re ending coverage for everyone on the plan, you can request same-day termination or pick a future date. A common choice is the last day of the current month, so a new employer plan can pick up on the first of the next month.3HealthCare.gov. Renew, Change, Update, or Cancel Your Plan You aren’t required to wait until month-end, but matching your end date to the start of new coverage prevents a gap.
If you’re only removing some household members, the rules are different. In most cases the removed person’s coverage ends on the last day of the current month, particularly when the change affects the premium tax credit for the rest of the household.4U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Cancelling or Terminating Consumer Marketplace Coverage Call if you need a specific date.
One point worth knowing before you cancel: voluntarily dropping your marketplace plan does not, by itself, qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period later.5HealthCare.gov. Special Enrollment Opportunities Cancel outside open enrollment without another qualifying event, and you’ll wait until the next enrollment window to get marketplace coverage again.
Removing One Person Instead of Ending the Plan
You don’t have to end the whole plan if only one person is leaving it. Say a spouse got job-based benefits, or an adult child aged off. This is handled as a life change, not a termination.
Log in and update your application to reflect who still needs marketplace coverage. Select only the members staying on the plan, and give a reason for anyone being removed. Then do the step most people miss: add the removed person back into the application as a household member who doesn’t need marketplace coverage. Premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions are based on total household size and income, so leaving them out of the household entirely throws the math off.4U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Cancelling or Terminating Consumer Marketplace Coverage You’ll then get a new eligibility notice and confirm the updated plan.
If the person being removed is the primary account holder who created the Get Covered NJ account, call customer service rather than doing it online. Canceling Because You’re Starting Medicare
If you’re moving to Medicare, timing matters more than in any other scenario. Set your Get Covered NJ termination date for the day before your Medicare coverage begins. If Medicare starts May 1, end your marketplace plan April 30.6Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. When to Terminate Coverage for Consumers Transitioning From Marketplace to Medicare Coverage
Overlap causes two problems. You pay double premiums for the overlap months, and you may have to repay any premium tax credits you received during them, because insurers are not allowed to knowingly sell marketplace plans to Medicare enrollees.6Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. When to Terminate Coverage for Consumers Transitioning From Marketplace to Medicare Coverage You can report your Medicare enrollment to Get Covered NJ up to three months before your Medicare start date, so there’s no reason to leave it until the last week.
Already on Medicare and still holding the marketplace plan? Cancel now. Termination dates can only be current or future, not retroactive, so every day of delay is another day of overlap.
The New Jersey Penalty for Going Without Coverage
New Jersey has its own health insurance mandate under the New Jersey Health Insurance Market Preservation Act of 2018. Cancel your marketplace plan and go without minimum essential coverage, and you’ll owe a shared responsibility payment on your NJ-1040.7NJ Department of the Treasury. NJ Health Insurance Mandate – Shared Responsibility Payment
The payment is based on income and family size, capped at the statewide average annual premium for a Bronze plan. For tax year 2025, a single individual owed a minimum of $695 and a maximum of $4,908. Family amounts run higher; a household of two adults and three dependents with income above $400,000 could owe up to $24,540.7NJ Department of the Treasury.
