How to Cancel Medicaid in Kentucky: Reporting and New Coverage

To cancel Medicaid in Kentucky, report the change in your circumstances through kynect, the state’s benefits portal. You can do it online at kynect.ky.gov, by phone, by mail, or in person at your local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) office. Kentucky Medicaid has no single “cancel” button; you report the life change that ended your eligibility, and the state processes the termination and sends you written notice before coverage actually ends.

Four Ways to Report the Change

Before you start, have your Medicaid ID number, full legal name, date of birth, and current address in front of you, along with the specific reason for the change: new employer-sponsored insurance, a move out of state, higher income, Medicare eligibility, or something else. Report the change promptly. Delays can interrupt your benefits or leave you owing back the cost of benefits you received while ineligible.1Commonwealth of Kentucky. What Happens After You Report

The state reviews your updated information and makes a new eligibility determination. Federal rules require written notice of any decision that affects your eligibility, including termination, and advance notice before coverage actually ends.6eCFR. 42 CFR Part 435 Subpart J – Redeterminations of Medicaid Eligibility Your coverage does not disappear the moment you click submit. The notice will specify the effective date your Medicaid ends, giving you time to arrange something else. If you think the state got the decision wrong, the notice will also explain your right to request a fair hearing.

Check Whether You Actually Need to Cancel

Voluntarily dropping Medicaid before other coverage is in place is one of the most costly mistakes people make, because even a brief gap can leave you exposed to significant medical bills. A couple of things to check first.

If your income went up but is still at or below 138% of the federal poverty level, you likely still qualify. Kentucky expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act to cover most adults at or below that threshold.

If you’re a parent who lost Medicaid eligibility specifically because of increased earnings, ask your caseworker about Transitional Medical Assistance. TMA extends Medicaid for at least six months and potentially up to twelve months while you stabilize in a new job, as long as you keep working and still live with a dependent child.

Lining Up New Coverage

Losing Medicaid is a qualifying life event. It opens a 60-day special enrollment period to sign up for a Qualified Health Plan through the kynect marketplace, and you can start shopping up to 60 days before coverage ends.7KHBE. Special Enrollment Details Miss that window and you may wait until the next open enrollment period, which can mean months without insurance.

  • Employer-sponsored insurance is usually the simplest transition if you or a spouse have access. Most employers allow enrollment within 30 days of losing other coverage.
  • Qualified Health Plans through kynect are available if your income is above 138% of the federal poverty level. Depending on your income, you may qualify for an Advance Premium Tax Credit that lowers your monthly premium along with cost-sharing reductions that lower deductibles and copays.8kynect Health Coverage. • Medicare becomes your primary coverage at 65 or when you qualify through a disability. Some people qualify for Medicare and Medicaid at the same time, so don’t assume one replaces the other without checking.
  • COBRA can continue a former employer’s group plan temporarily, though you pay the full premium. A kynect marketplace plan with subsidies is usually cheaper.9HealthCare.gov. COBRA Coverage When You’re Unemployed

If You’re Moving Out of Kentucky

Medicaid is state-specific, so a move out of Kentucky ends your Kentucky coverage. Report the address change through kynect as soon as you know your move date, and apply separately for Medicaid or other coverage in your new state. The loss of Kentucky Medicaid still triggers a 60-day special enrollment period for marketplace coverage in your new state.10Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). One Tax Form to Keep

Kentucky’s Medicaid agency sends a Form 1095-B for any year you had Medicaid coverage, confirming the months of minimum essential coverage for your federal tax return. For 2025 coverage, the IRS extended the furnishing deadline to March 2, 2026.11Internal Revenue Service.
