How to Cancel SunPass: Steps, Transponder, and Refund

To cancel a SunPass account, log in at SunPass.com or the mobile app and use the Close My Account option, call customer service at 1-888-865-5352, or visit a walk-in center in Florida. Clear any outstanding balance first, remove the transponder from your windshield, and expect a 21-day waiting period before your refund is issued.

Clear These Things First

Your balance has to be at zero or positive before SunPass will process a closure. Log in and check for pending tolls, unpaid invoices, or a negative balance, and pay anything owed through the portal. If auto-replenish has recently topped off your account, that surplus comes back to you as a refund after closing, so you don’t need to spend it down.

Have your account number and the password or PIN you set at registration ready. If you’ve lost the account number, you can find it by logging in on the website or app. You’ll also want the transponder number for each device on the account, which appears on your dashboard under transponder management or on the barcode sticker on the unit itself.

Three Ways to Close the Account

Online or in the App

Log in at SunPass.com, go to your Account Profile, and choose Close My Account. The mobile app has the same option. The system walks you through deactivating each linked transponder before it finalizes the request, and you get a digital record of the submission.

By Phone

Call the SunPass Customer Service Center at 1-888-865-5352 (1-888-TOLL-FLA). Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.1Florida’s Turnpike. SunPass The agent verifies your identity, confirms the balance is clear, and processes the closure. If your account has a dispute or something unusual going on, phone lets you sort it out in the same call.

At a Walk-In Center

SunPass runs walk-in centers across Florida, including Orlando, Brandon, Doral, Boca Raton, St. Petersburg, Niceville, and Milton.2SunPass. Contact Us – SunPass Most are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Going in person lets you hand over a portable transponder and walk out with a receipt. Confirm hours and the nearest location on the SunPass site before you go.

What to Do With the Transponder

Pull the transponder off your windshield as soon as you submit the closure request. During the waiting period a mounted unit can still be read at toll gantries, and stray charges will complicate your final balance.

The SunPass Mini is a permanent sticker. Once you peel it off it stops working, because the windshield glass acts as part of the antenna.3Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority. How to Install a Transponder It can’t be reattached or moved to another vehicle. Throw it in the regular trash.

Portable transponders, including the SunPass PRO, are reusable and need to be returned or safely disposed of. If you’re mailing one back, SunPass offers shield bags that block the radio signal in transit; order one through your account under Transponders and Vehicles by clicking Request Supplies. No shield bag on hand? Wrapping the unit in aluminum foil keeps roadside sensors from reading it while it’s in the mail. If you’re going to a walk-in center, just bring the device with you.

The 21-Day Wait and Your Refund

SunPass doesn’t close accounts instantly. After you submit the request, there’s a 21-day waiting period while recent toll transactions finish posting.4SunPass. Frequently Asked Questions – SunPass Tolls can take several days to appear, and the buffer makes sure everything is captured before the refund is calculated.

Once the waiting period ends and all charges have cleared, SunPass issues the refund. The credit usually shows up on the card that funded the account within about five business days.4SunPass. Frequently Asked Questions – SunPass Plan on roughly four weeks total from closure request to money back. If the card on file is expired or closed, call customer service before submitting the closure so you can update the payment method or arrange another way to get the refund.

Don’t Just Stop Using the Account

Walking away without formally closing is worse than it sounds. If auto-replenish is on, SunPass keeps charging your card to maintain a prepaid balance, and the system can adjust the replenishment amount based on your usage history.5SunPass. SunPass Customer Agreement The account stays active and your card stays on file until you act.

Turning off auto-replenish without closing is better than nothing, but it leaves an open account carrying your personal and payment information. Closing it deactivates the transponders, returns the remaining balance, and ends the relationship cleanly.

Check These Details Before You Submit

Confirm that the mailing address on file is current, since a refund check would go to whatever address the system has. Make sure every transponder on the account is listed for deactivation. A second Mini in a spouse’s car or a portable unit forgotten in a glove compartment can generate toll charges that surface weeks later as unpaid invoices, which is exactly the outcome closing the account is supposed to prevent.

One boundary worth knowing: if you’re leaving Florida and you have a SunPass PRO, that portable unit works in more than twenty other states wherever E-ZPass is accepted, so keeping the account open may make more sense than cancelling.6SunPass. SunPass PRO The standard Mini sticker only works in Florida, so a move out of state is a clean reason to close.
