To cancel a vehicle registration in Florida, surrender the license plate to a local tax collector’s office, license plate agent, or driver license office, either in person or by mail. There is no online option. Bring the physical plate and a photo ID, add Form HSMV 82050 if you sold the vehicle, and keep the receipt you get back as proof.
When You Need to Surrender the Plate
Florida law requires you to remove the license plate whenever you sell, trade, or otherwise dispose of a vehicle. You can transfer that plate to another vehicle you own, or you can surrender it to the state.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.0609 – Transfer and Exchange of Registration License Plates; Transfer Fee Surrender is also the right move when you move out of Florida and register the vehicle elsewhere, when your insurance is canceled or lapses, or when the vehicle is totaled, destroyed, or stolen. Each of these situations creates a gap between your active registration and reality, and Florida’s automated systems will eventually catch it.
How to Cancel in Person
Walk into any local tax collector’s office, license plate agent, or driver license office with the plate and your ID.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. RS-43 Surrender of a License Plate by Owner No appointment is needed. Staff process the surrender and hand you a receipt on the spot. Keep that receipt. It is your proof the plate was returned if a suspension notice or toll charge shows up later.
How to Cancel by Mail
Send the physical license plate to your local tax collector’s office along with a signed letter stating the reason for surrender (sold the vehicle, moved out of state, canceled insurance) and a copy of your photo ID. Some counties publish a dedicated surrender-by-mail form; where none exists, a signed letter is enough. Use a trackable shipping method. A plate lost in the mail with no proof of surrender leaves you exposed to the same problems the cancellation was meant to prevent.
Either way, you receive a receipt confirming the cancellation.
Documents to Bring
At minimum: the physical plate and a valid photo ID. Your Florida driver’s license works.
If you sold the vehicle, add Form HSMV 82050, the Notice of Sale. It is available from the FLHSMV website and any tax collector’s office, and it removes your name from the vehicle’s registration record.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. If the vehicle was totaled or destroyed, bring insurer documentation such as a settlement letter or salvage title. If the plate itself was lost, destroyed, or stolen, you will need to sign an affidavit explaining what happened before the cancellation can be processed.
If You Sold the Vehicle, File Form HSMV 82050
Surrendering the plate closes out the registration. Filing Form HSMV 82050 does something separate and equally important: it shifts responsibility to the buyer to apply for a new title and registration before driving.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. You can submit the form at a motor vehicle service center or a tax collector’s office at the same time you surrender the plate, which handles both tasks in one trip.
What Skipping the Cancellation Costs
Florida does not send a polite reminder when something is off with your registration. The consequences are automatic.
Insurance Lapse Suspension
Florida requires proof of insurance before issuing a registration, and insurers notify the state when coverage ends.5The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.02 – Registration Required; Application for Registration If state records show a registered vehicle with no coverage, both the registration and your driver’s license get suspended. Reinstatement runs $150 for a first offense, $250 for a second within three years, and $500 for each additional one in that window, plus a two-year proof-of-coverage requirement.6The Florida Legislature. Toll Charges in Your Name
Florida’s toll system photographs plates and bills the registered owner. Sell the car without surrendering the plate, and toll charges from the new driver can land on you. Refunds and Credits
Florida does not prorate annual registration fees. Canceling mid-year does not get you money back for the unused months.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. HSMV 83363 – Application for License Plate and Decal Refund Two narrow exceptions apply.
If the vehicle was destroyed or permanently removed from Florida, you can apply for a credit covering the unexpired portion of the registration. The credit applies toward registering another vehicle in your name rather than as a cash refund, must be at least $3, and expires at the end of the current registration period.9The Florida Legislature. Florida also charges a one-time $225 initial registration fee when a vehicle is first registered in the state. If you dispose of the vehicle within three months of paying that fee, you can get a refund.10The Florida Legislature. Canceling When You Move Out of State
Register the vehicle in your new state first, then surrender the Florida plate. Some states require a current, valid prior-state registration during titling, so canceling too early can create paperwork problems on the other end. Once your new registration is in hand, surrender the Florida plate by mail or in person and keep the receipt. Moving out of state also qualifies for the unexpired credit under Florida Statutes 320.15 if you later register another vehicle in Florida.9The Florida Legislature.
