To change your address in Illinois after moving, you have 10 days to notify the Secretary of State of your new address for both your driver’s license and your vehicle registration.1Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5 – Notice of Change of Residence Address or Legal Name FOID card holders get 21 days with the Illinois State Police. Voter registration runs on its own clock tied to the next election, and your state tax records at the Department of Revenue have to be updated separately. No single filing covers all of it, so plan to work through the list in the first week.
Before you sit down, pull together your Illinois driver’s license or state ID number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your license plate number, and your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN.2Illinois Secretary of State. Address Change – ILSOS Have your old address exactly as it appears on your current records; mismatches cause delays. You’ll also need your complete new street address with any unit number.
Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration

Getting a Corrected Physical Card
Updating your address online changes the state’s electronic record, but it does not produce a new physical card. If you want a license or ID showing the current address, you have to apply for a corrected card and pay a separate fee. You can also wait until your next renewal as long as the electronic file is up to date. Check the Secretary of State’s current fee schedule before you order one.
Real ID Considerations
If your current card is a Real ID and you ask for a corrected version with your new address, you’ll need to bring two documents proving Illinois residency at that address. Utility bills, bank statements, and lease agreements showing your name and new address are typical options. If you’re only updating the electronic record and skipping the physical card, no residency documents are required.
Voter Registration
A move almost always changes your precinct and polling place, so update your voter registration through the Illinois Online Voter Registration system, which routes to your local election authority. The standard deadline to register or update is 28 days before an election. An update that arrives after that cutoff won’t take effect for that election under normal processing.
If you miss the 28-day window, you can still vote through grace period registration. Grace period runs from the day after the standard deadline through election day itself, but it generally has to be completed in person at your county clerk’s office or local board of election commissioners, and you’re expected to cast your ballot at the same visit. If you moved just before an election, this is the route to use, and the key is going to the election authority’s office rather than your old polling place.
Once your change is processed, the election authority mails a new voter identification card with your new precinct and polling location. Read it before election day so you show up at the right place.
Illinois State Tax Records
The Illinois Department of Revenue keeps its own address file, separate from the Secretary of State. If you have a MyTax Illinois account for individual income tax, log in and change your contact information there.4Illinois.gov. IL-1040 Address Change Setting up an account generally requires a recent bill or notice from the department.
Two things ride on this: refunds and assessment notices. A refund mailed to the old address can disappear into postal limbo, and an assessment notice you never receive can quietly accumulate penalties and interest. If you’re filing a return for a year during which you moved, use the address where you lived on December 31 of that tax year.
FOID Card Holders
If you have a Firearm Owner’s Identification card, Illinois gives you 21 calendar days to notify the Illinois State Police of your new address. That’s a longer window than the Secretary of State’s 10 days, but it’s a separate obligation. Update your FOID address online through the ISP Firearms Services Bureau site or by calling (217) 782-7980. A corrected FOID card costs $5.5Illinois State Police. Transporting Your Firearm The address on your FOID has to match your Illinois driver’s license or state ID, so update the Secretary of State records first.

A Sensible Order to Do It All
The practical trick is that no single filing updates every agency. The fastest path: handle the Secretary of State online the day you move, set up USPS forwarding the same day, and then work through voter registration, state taxes, federal taxes, and any FOID or professional license updates within the first week. Waiting until one of these becomes urgent usually means dealing with a missed refund, trouble at the polls, or an awkward moment during a traffic stop.
