To change your address in Massachusetts, start with the Registry of Motor Vehicles: state law gives you 30 days from your move date to update your license and vehicle registration, and the registrar can suspend either one if you miss that window.1General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 26A – Licenses and Learners Permits; Reporting Changes of Name and Address From there, you’ll also need to update your voter registration, the Department of Revenue, the IRS and Social Security, USPS forwarding, and your auto insurer. Handling them together saves months of chasing paperwork later.
Update the RMV Within 30 Days
The 30-day clock starts on the day you move, not the day you finish unpacking. The statute applies to anyone holding a Massachusetts driver’s license, learner’s permit, or vehicle registration, and the RMV has authority to revoke or suspend either if you don’t report the change in time.1General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 26A – Licenses and Learners Permits; Reporting Changes of Name and Address
The fastest way is the online portal at mass.gov. Before you start, have three things ready: your driver’s license or Massachusetts ID number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and an email address.2Mass.gov. Change Your Address With the RMV You’ll confirm your old and new addresses, submit, and receive a confirmation number on screen. It takes a few minutes.
If you’d rather use paper, print the Change of Address form and mail it in. Be careful to distinguish your previous residential address, new physical address, and mailing address clearly. A wrong apartment number or missing street suffix is enough to get the submission rejected.
Your License Card and Registration
Updating the address does not trigger a new plastic card. You have two options: pay $25 for a replacement license showing the new address, or download a free address label from the RMV website and stick it on the back of your current card.3Mass.gov. Replace Your Drivers License Either way, the RMV’s records already reflect the new address.
The 30-day rule applies to your vehicle registration too. The online portal updates both your license and registration in one transaction. If you mail the form, make sure it covers both.
Voter Registration
Massachusetts uses automatic voter registration, so an RMV transaction can update your voter record at the same time. If you’re already registered, changing your address at the RMV may push the new address through to your voter registration, and you’ll get a letter afterward offering the chance to pick a party affiliation or opt out.
Don’t assume it worked. The transfer isn’t instant and doesn’t always go through cleanly. Check your status through the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s voter information lookup before any upcoming election.
If you need to register or update directly, the deadline is 10 days before any election or town meeting.4Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Registering to Vote To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, and a resident of the city or town where you’re registering.5General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Code Chapter 51, Section 1 – Qualifications of Voters With a signature on file at the RMV, you can register online through the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website; online submissions must go through by 11:59 p.m. on the deadline date. Otherwise, print the voter registration form and mail or hand-deliver it to your local city or town clerk.
Your new address determines your precinct, which controls your polling location and which local races appear on your ballot. Once the local board of registrars processes the change, they’ll mail a confirmation to your new address.
Massachusetts Department of Revenue
State agencies don’t share address updates with each other, so the RMV change doesn’t reach the Department of Revenue. Update it through MassTaxConnect by logging into your account and editing your address directly.6Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Individuals and Businesses: Update Your Name or Address With DOR

IRS and Social Security
Federal agencies won’t hear about your move from the state. Handle them separately.
IRS
The simplest option is to use the new address on your next federal tax return, which updates your records automatically. To do it sooner, file Form 8822 (Change of Address) by mail. Massachusetts residents send the form to the IRS Service Center in Kansas City, MO 64999-0023.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822, Change of Address You can also call the IRS or send a signed written statement with your full name, old address, new address, and Social Security number. Processing generally takes four to six weeks.8Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes
Social Security
If you receive Social Security benefits or are enrolled in Medicare, update your address through the My Profile tab of your my Social Security account at ssa.gov. SSI recipients, and anyone who can’t update online, should call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, or visit a local Social Security office.9Social Security Administration. USPS Mail Forwarding
None of the updates above catches mail already on its way to your old address. File a USPS change of address to forward mail for 12 months. Online at usps.com, there’s a $1.25 identity verification fee charged to a credit or debit card.10USPS. You can extend forwarding for up to 18 additional months after the first year.11USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address
Treat forwarding as a safety net, not a permanent fix. Update your address directly with banks, insurers, and subscription services in the first few weeks.
Auto Insurance
Your auto premium is partly based on your garaging address, meaning where your car sits overnight. Moving to a neighborhood with fewer claims can lower your rate; moving somewhere with more theft or collisions can raise it. Your insurer may also recalculate based on your new commute. Call your carrier, and be ready to provide proof of the new address, such as a utility bill or updated license.
Skipping this step isn’t only a billing question. If an insurer discovers after an accident that you’ve been parking in a different ZIP code than your policy shows, they can treat it as a material misrepresentation, which complicates claims at the worst possible moment. If you’re moving to Massachusetts from another state, you’ll also need to switch to a Massachusetts auto policy within the timeframe your new state of residence requires.
If You’re Moving to Escape Harm
If your move is tied to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office runs an Address Confidentiality Program that gives participants a substitute address to use on RMV records and other state agency filings, so someone searching public databases cannot find you. You’ll need to have recently moved to an address unknown to the person posing a threat, and you apply with help from a certified application assistant, typically at a domestic violence shelter or rape crisis center. Program staff forward mail sent to your substitute address to your actual location. The program also extends to people involved in providing legally protected healthcare services, including reproductive and gender-affirming care.12Mass.gov. Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) If you think this applies to you, enroll before filing any of the routine updates above, because once your new address is in a government database, the confidentiality option loses much of its value.
