How to Change Your Address in Ohio: BMV, USPS, Taxes & Voter

To change your address in Ohio after a move, update your driver’s license and vehicle registration with the Ohio BMV within ten days, forward your mail through USPS, confirm your voter registration moved with you, and notify state, municipal, and federal tax authorities along with any benefits agencies you deal with. The BMV step carries a legal deadline; the rest you should do promptly to avoid misrouted refunds, ballots, and benefit checks.

Update Your Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration Within 10 Days

Ohio law requires every licensed driver to notify the registrar of a new address within ten days of moving.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4507.09 – Expiration and Renewal of License The same ten-day window applies to anyone holding a vehicle registration.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.101 – Establishing System of Motor Vehicle Registration One form handles both.

Form BMV 5756

The form is BMV 5756, “Request for Change of Address.” It asks for your name, date of birth, driver’s license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your signature, and both your old and new addresses with county and jurisdiction type. If you own vehicles, you can list up to four license plate numbers so your registration updates at the same time.3Ohio Department of Public Safety. BMV 5756 Request for Change of Address

Submitting BMV 5756 also counts as a voter registration address change under the National Voter Registration Act and Ohio Revised Code Section 3503.11, which the form itself notes.3Ohio Department of Public Safety. BMV 5756 Request for Change of Address Handle the BMV properly and your voter record follows.

How to Submit It

You have three choices:

  • Online, through the BMV portal at bmvonline.dps.ohio.gov, which offers a Change of Address service for residential or mailing address updates.4Ohio BMV Online Services. BMV Online Services
  • By mail to BMV headquarters in Columbus.
  • In person at any deputy registrar’s office, which is the only route if you want a new physical card the same day.

Fees and the Physical Card

The address change itself is free. The BMV updates your electronic record, but your existing license still shows the old address on the plastic. A duplicate operator’s license costs $29.00 if you want a card that matches.5Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Documents and Fees The electronic record is what matters legally, so the new card is optional.

Proof of Address If You Go In Person

Visiting a deputy registrar, particularly for a REAL ID-compliant license, means bringing two documents from different sources that show your new Ohio street address. Acceptable documents include utility bills, bank statements, insurance documents, mortgage statements, tax returns, and school records.6Ohio BMV Online Services. Forward Your Mail Through USPS

Set up mail forwarding at usps.com. It takes a few minutes and costs $1.25 for identity verification, charged to a credit or debit card whose billing address matches your old or new address.7USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address First-class mail forwards for 12 months and packages for 15 days; after that, items go back to the sender. Keep the confirmation email, since the BMV accepts it as one of the documents proving your new address.6Ohio BMV Online Services. Acceptable Documents List

Confirm Your Voter Registration

If you filed BMV 5756, your voter registration should update automatically through the BMV’s connection to the Secretary of State.3Ohio Department of Public Safety. BMV 5756 Request for Change of Address You can also update directly through the Ohio Secretary of State’s online portal using your name and the last four digits of your Social Security number, or by mailing the Ohio Voter Registration and Information Update Form to the board of elections in your new county.8Ohio Secretary of State. Register to Vote – Voter Information

Timing matters. Ohio requires voter registration updates to be in at least 30 days before an election to apply to that cycle. Miss the cutoff and you may be casting a provisional ballot, and a ballot cast at the wrong precinct may not be counted at all.

Military and Overseas Voters

Active-duty members and their families living away from their Ohio voting residence should submit a Federal Post Card Application after each move. The FPCA registers you to vote and requests an absentee ballot in one step. Sending a fresh FPCA every January and after any move ensures Ohio sends your ballot at least 45 days before the election.9FVAP.gov. Military Voters – How to Vote Absentee

Notify Tax Authorities

Moving within Ohio can touch your taxes at three levels. Each needs separate notification.

Ohio Department of Taxation

Update your state record through the OH|TAX eServices portal at tax.ohio.gov so refunds and notices follow you.10Ohio Department of Taxation. Business Address Update Form Filing your next annual return with the new address also updates your record, but if you moved early in the year that leaves months where mail can go astray.

Municipal Income Tax (RITA or CCA)

Ohio cities and villages levy their own income taxes, and most are collected by one of two regional agencies: the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA) or the Central Collection Agency (CCA). When you move between municipalities, your employer may keep withholding for the old city unless you notify both your employer and the collecting agency. Contact the agency serving your new municipality to update your address and confirm the correct local rate. Skip this and you can end up paying the wrong city and then owing the right one, with interest.

Internal Revenue Service

For federal taxes, file IRS Form 8822 (Change of Address). The form has to be mailed, not filed electronically, and Ohio residents send it to the IRS in Ogden, Utah. If your most recent return was joint, both spouses must sign unless one of you is establishing a separate residence.11Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 Change of Address Allow four to six weeks for processing.12Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes Children who filed their own returns each need a separate Form 8822.

Federal Benefits and Passport

Social Security

If you receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, update your address under the My Profile tab in your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, where you can also pick when the change takes effect.13Social Security Administration. How Can I Change My Address or Direct Deposit Information The online option is not available for Supplemental Security Income recipients, who need to call Social Security or visit a local office.

Passport

You do not need to update a current U.S. passport with a new address; the State Department doesn’t track residential address on an existing passport. The exception is a passport application being processed right now, in which case call 1-877-487-2778 to update the mailing address for delivery.14Travel.State.Gov. Change or Correct a Passport
