To change your address in Oregon after a move, start with the DMV within 30 days, then work through voter registration, state tax records, USPS mail forwarding, your insurance policies, and any business or professional accounts tied to your old address. Skipping the DMV step is a traffic violation that carries a $115 presumptive fine, so it’s the one with a clock on it.1Oregon State Legislature. You have three ways to report the change:
- Online at DMV2U.Oregon.gov, by signing in and following the address-change prompts.
- By phone at 503-945-5000.
- In person at any DMV field office.
Those are the only accepted methods. Form 735-6438, which you may see linked on the DMV website, is an instruction sheet describing these three options, not a form you fill in and submit.3Oregon Department of Transportation. How to Change Your Address
When you use any of the three channels, DMV updates the address on your driver license or ID record and your vehicle registration records. If you ask them to, they’ll also pass the new address to your voter registration at the same time, which saves you a separate step.3Oregon Department of Transportation. How to Change Your Address
One thing to know: Oregon stopped issuing address-change stickers for the back of licenses in January 2020, so you won’t get a physical update to your card.4Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services. Changing Your Address For legal purposes the DMV’s internal record is what counts. If you want a card showing your new address, you’d have to order a replacement for a separate fee.
Update Your Voter Registration
Oregon votes entirely by mail, and ballots aren’t forwarded by the postal service. If your registration still points to your old address, your ballot lands there.
If you have an Oregon driver license or state ID, you can update your voter registration entirely online through the Secretary of State’s My Vote portal. Enter your name and date of birth, choose “Update Registration,” confirm your eligibility, enter the new address, and submit.5Oregon Secretary of State. Update Voter Registration Information Without an Oregon license or ID, you can still start online, but you’ll need to print the resulting card, sign it, and mail it to your county elections office.6Oregon Secretary of State. Deadlines are forgiving if you’re already registered. You can update your address up to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day and still vote, though a last-minute change may mean picking up your ballot at the county elections office rather than receiving it in the mail.5Oregon Secretary of State. Update Oregon Department of Revenue Records
The Oregon Department of Revenue uses the address on file to send refund checks, notices, and account correspondence. Its change-of-address form is Form 150-800-735, downloadable from the department’s website and submitted by mail.7Oregon Department of Revenue. Taxpayer Authorization Forms Oregon also runs a Revenue Online portal where some account changes can be made digitally, though available features vary by account type.
You’ll need your Social Security Number or ITIN and both your old and new addresses. If you file jointly, include your spouse’s details so both records update together.
Set Up USPS Mail Forwarding
Agency updates won’t catch every piece of mail. Banks, medical offices, and subscription services all have your old address on file and won’t know you moved until you tell them. Mail forwarding covers you while you work through the list.
A permanent change-of-address request forwards first-class mail for 12 months and periodicals for 60 days. File online at usps.com for a $1.25 identity verification fee, or go into your local post office and fill out PS Form 3575 for free.8USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address If your move is between 15 days and one year, there’s a temporary forwarding option instead.
Treat forwarding as a safety net rather than a solution. After 12 months, unforwarded first-class mail gets returned to sender. Use the window to contact companies and agencies directly with your new address.
Update Your Insurance Policies
Insurance is the step people most often forget, and the one with the highest financial stakes. Your auto premium is tied to your garaging address, the location where your car spends most of its time. A new neighborhood changes the risk picture through local theft rates, accident frequency, and commute distance. Call your insurer as soon as the move is confirmed.
The risk of not updating isn’t only a missed rate adjustment. If an insurer discovers at claim time that you’ve been living at an unreported address, the claim can be denied or the policy rescinded for misrepresentation. Some insurers also backdate premium adjustments, so you’d owe the difference between what you paid and what you should have been paying.
Renters and homeowners policies are equally address-dependent. A renters policy covers belongings at a specific location, so moving without updating it can leave you uninsured at the new place. If you own and are moving to a new property, your mortgage lender will typically require proof of homeowners coverage tied to the new address before closing.
Update Business Registration if You Own a Company
If you run a business registered in Oregon, your registered office address and registered agent information need to stay current with the Secretary of State. You can update records online through the Oregon Business Registry by logging in and filing an Information Change, or submit a paper Information Change form by mail or fax. Email isn’t accepted for security reasons.9Oregon Secretary of State. Business – Update Registration
An outdated registered office address can cause you to miss legal service of process, tax notices, and annual report reminders. Missing enough annual report filings can eventually lead to administrative dissolution of the entity.
Other Accounts Worth Updating in the First Weeks
A handful of other updates are easy to overlook but worth handling early:
- Employer payroll, so your W-2 reaches you and withholding reflects your new local tax jurisdiction if that changed.
- Banks and credit card issuers, to avoid delayed replacement cards and fraud alerts triggered by transactions in an unfamiliar area.
- Oregon professional or occupational licensing boards, most of which require you to report address changes within a set period. Beyond the possible disciplinary consequence, this is how renewal notices find you.
- Pharmacies, doctors’ offices, and your health insurance plan, for billing, prescription delivery, and explanation-of-benefits statements.
Handling these in one sitting after your move, rather than one at a time as problems surface, keeps a missed notice from turning into a lapsed policy or an unexpected penalty months later.
