The same ten-day window covers a name change, whether through marriage or any other reason. The clock starts when you actually move, not when you sign a lease or close on a house. If you’re still sleeping at the old place while boxes pile up at the new one, you haven’t technically moved yet. Once you’re settled, don’t sit on it.
Changing Your Address Online
Kansas has two online options, and the difference matters. The Kansas Department of Revenue’s address change page updates your address in the state’s system but does not issue a new card. Changing Your Address In Person
At a driver’s license office, bring your current Kansas license and one piece of mail showing your name and new residential address. For a straightforward address change on an existing license, one proof of address is enough. The two-document requirement applies to first-time issuance or a REAL ID application, which are different transactions.
What It Costs
Updating your address in the state’s system is free, online or in person. You pay only if you want a new physical card. A replacement driver’s license or learner’s permit costs $16, and a replacement ID card costs $12. You don’t need a new card to satisfy the ten-day requirement. The system update on its own counts as notification. That said, carrying a card with the wrong address can create friction during a traffic stop or when using your license as identification, and many people decide the $16 is worth it.
Military Members Stationed Out of State
Active-duty military members and their dependents stationed outside Kansas can renew, replace, or extend a Kansas driver’s license by mail without returning to the state. What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
K.S.A. 8-248 creates the obligation to report but does not set out a specific penalty in its own text.2Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. An outdated address means you could miss vehicle registration renewal notices, court correspondence, or notices about your driving privileges. If the state mails a suspension order to your old address, the fact that you never saw it won’t save you from driving on a suspended license.
During a traffic stop, an officer who sees an old address may ask additional questions to verify your identity. That’s a minor hassle in a routine stop, but it can turn into a real problem when a discrepancy complicates a time-sensitive situation.
