How to Change Your Address on a Texas Driver’s License

To change your address on a Texas driver’s license, notify the Department of Public Safety within 30 days of your move and apply for a duplicate card showing the new address. The fee is $11, and you can handle it online through the Texas by Texas (TxT) portal, by mail using Form DL-64, or in person at a driver license office.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees Online is fastest when you qualify for it; some drivers have to use another method.

The 30-Day Deadline

Texas Transportation Code 521.054 gives you 30 days after a move to notify DPS and apply for a duplicate license showing the new address.2Texas Public Law. Texas Code Transportation Code 521.054 – Notice of Change of Address or Name The rule covers standard driver licenses, commercial driver licenses, and state ID cards.

If you get cited for an outdated address, a court can dismiss the charge when you fix the problem within 20 working days and pay a reimbursement fee of up to $20, which the court can also waive in the interest of justice.2Texas Public Law. Who Can Use Which Method

Whichever method you choose, your license cannot be expired, suspended, or revoked. Resolve any of those first.3Department of Public Safety. How to Change Information on Your Driver License or ID Card

Non-citizens generally cannot use the online or mail-in options. DPS requires proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, and a specialist at a driver license office must verify your status electronically with the Department of Homeland Security. If verification can’t be completed on the spot, the transaction goes to additional review, so DPS recommends starting at least 30 days before any document expiration.4Department of Public Safety. What to Have Ready Before You Start

Every method needs your current driver license number and your new residential address. For the TxT portal, you’ll also need the Audit Number from your card (sometimes labeled “DD,” usually near the bottom or printed vertically along one side) and the last four digits of your Social Security Number for identity verification.

For an in-person visit, bring two printed documents proving Texas residency. Both must show your name and new address, and at least one must confirm you’ve lived in Texas for 30 days or more. Common choices include a current lease, deed, or mortgage statement; a utility bill dated within 180 days (electric, water, gas, internet, cable, streaming, lawn, or cell phone); or a current homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy, statement, or card. Two statements from different months for the same service don’t count as two separate documents.5Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards

The Three Ways to Update Your Address

The $11 replacement card fee applies regardless of which route you take.1Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees

Online Through the TxT Portal

Sign in to Texas by Texas at texas.gov and choose the option to change the address on your driver license or ID card.6Texas by Texas (TxT). Texas Driver License and ID Renewals and Replacements Enter the new address, review it, and pay the $11 fee by credit card. When the transaction is complete, you can download and print a temporary permit to carry while you wait for your new card.

By Mail

Download Form DL-64 from the DPS website, fill in your full legal name, current license number, and new physical address, and mail it with payment to:7Texas Department of Public Safety. DPS will send a temporary credential you can use as valid ID until the permanent card arrives.

In Person

Visit any DPS driver license office with your current license and two residency documents. In-person is the right choice if your license is close to expiring and you want to combine the address change with a renewal, or if you need the in-person identity verification required for non-citizens. Driver license offices accept cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards.1Texas Department of Public Safety. How Long the New Card Takes

Your replacement card typically arrives by mail in two to three weeks.8Department of Public Safety. Where’s My Driver License or ID Card? Carry the temporary permit from your transaction in the meantime; it’s legally valid identification. If more than three weeks pass, use the DPS “Where’s My Driver License” page to check status and request a reprint if needed.

Voter Registration Updates Automatically

Under the federal National Voter Registration Act, an address change you submit through a state motor vehicle agency also updates your voter registration unless you opt out.9Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 This applies to online, mail, and in-person transactions. Watch for the opt-out option during the process if you’d rather handle voter registration separately.

What a DPS Update Does Not Cover

Changing your license address does not change your other address-based records. A few that trip people up:

Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registration is run by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, not DPS. You can change the mailing address for renewal notices online through TxDMV, but updating the owner address on your title or your vehicle location address takes a separate form.10Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Auto Insurance

Your rate depends partly on where the car is parked overnight. Tell your carrier the new garaging address before you move so a claim isn’t denied over a coverage gap.

IRS

The IRS doesn’t pick up address changes from a state DMV. File Form 8822 directly with the IRS so refunds and notices find you.11Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8822, Change of Address

Social Security Administration

If you receive Social Security benefits, update your address through your my Social Security account or by calling 1-800-772-1213.12Social Security Administration. Update Contact Information

USPS Mail Forwarding

A USPS change of address catches stray mail during the transition, but it does not update any agency’s records. First-class forwarding lasts 12 months; periodicals forward for only three. Use it as a backup, not a substitute for updating each agency.
