How to Change Your Address on an Ohio Driver’s License

To change your address on an Ohio driver’s license, log in to the Ohio BMV’s online portal and submit a change of address, or take your license and two proof-of-address documents to any deputy registrar. Either way, Ohio law gives you ten days from the date you move.

The 10-Day Deadline

Ohio Revised Code 4507.09 requires every licensed driver, and every state ID cardholder, to notify the BMV of a new address within ten days of moving.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code Section 4507.09 – Expiration and Renewal of License The statute does not set a specific fine, but an outdated address can complicate a traffic stop or any situation where you need your license as proof of where you live.

A change of address filed with the U.S. Postal Service does not update your BMV record. Mail forwarding and BMV records run on separate systems, so you need to notify each one.

Update Your Address Online

The fastest route is the BMV’s online portal at bmvonline.dps.ohio.gov.2Ohio BMV Online Services. Ohio BMV Online Services Log in to your Ohio|ID account or create one, choose “Change of Address,” and enter your new residential address. You can add a separate mailing address in the same transaction if you use a P.O. Box or receive mail somewhere other than home.

Your record updates immediately once you submit. A new physical card showing the updated address is optional; if you want one, you can order a duplicate reprint during the same transaction for $9.00.3Ohio BMV. Update Your Address in Person

You can walk into any deputy registrar license agency and update your address at the counter. Bring your current driver’s license or ID card and two documents from different sources that prove your new Ohio street address.4Ohio BMV Online Services. Acceptable Documents List “Different sources” is strict: two bills from the same utility company will not count, but a gas bill and a bank statement will.

Documents That Prove Your New Address

Bring two of the following, from two different sources:4Ohio BMV Online Services. Acceptable Documents List

  • Utility bills from the last 12 months (electric, gas, water, sewer, cable, satellite, phone, heating oil, or propane). Two utility bills from different providers count as two documents.
  • Bank, savings, investment, or credit card statements from the last 12 months.
  • A current renter’s, homeowner’s, life, or auto insurance policy or card.
  • A federal or Ohio income tax return from the current or previous tax year, with proof of filing.
  • A mortgage account statement or installment loan contract from a financial institution, issued within the last 12 months.
  • A property deed, property tax bill, or county auditor tax statement.
  • Social Security Administration correspondence, an Ohio concealed weapons permit, a professional license from a government agency, or a public assistance benefits statement from the last 12 months.
  • Postcards or letters sent to you by the Ohio BMV.
  • Your current Ohio motor vehicle title or registration card.

If you cannot produce two qualifying documents, because you just moved in with family and mail hasn’t caught up, ask about the “Proof of Ohio Residency — Certified Statement” form (BMV 2336). Information to Have Ready

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or ID card number
  • Social Security number
  • County of residence
  • New street address

Gather all of it before you start. The online process takes just a few minutes if you are not hunting for your license number partway through.

Your Voter Registration Updates at the Same Time

A change-of-address form submitted to the BMV also updates your voter registration address under both federal and Ohio law.5Ohio Department of Public Safety. You can opt out by checking a box on the form, in which case you’ll need to update your voter registration yourself through the county board.

If you moved to a new county and an election is close, confirm with your new county board of elections that the transfer went through, especially if you changed your address near a registration deadline.

If You Have a Compliant (REAL ID) Card

Updating your address online does not affect the compliant status of your card, because the BMV already verified your identity documents when the card was first issued.6Ohio BMV.
