To make a change of address on an SC driver’s license, use the SCDMV’s online portal, mail in Form 4057, or visit any SCDMV branch in person. The online option is free and takes a few minutes. South Carolina law gives you 10 days from the date of your move to report the new address.

You should receive an email confirmation. Keep it handy as temporary proof while your records are processing.
Update It by Mail

If you’re near the 10-day deadline, certified mail gives you dated proof of when you sent it.
Update It in Person
Walk into any SCDMV branch with your current driver’s license and give the clerk your new address. You may be asked to fill out Form 4057 at the counter. Bring proof of your new South Carolina address in case it’s requested, particularly if you also want a new card printed or plan to upgrade to a REAL ID during the visit.
The 10-Day Deadline and Penalty
South Carolina Code 56-1-230 requires you to notify the SCDMV in writing within 10 days of permanently changing the address on your license.4South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 56-1-230 – Notification of Change of Address or Name The online portal counts as writing.
Missing the window is a misdemeanor. A first offense carries a fine of up to $200 or up to 30 days in jail. A second or subsequent offense can mean up to $500 or up to six months.5South Carolina Legislature. Do You Get a New Card?
No. Reporting a new address updates the SCDMV’s records but does not produce a new physical license. Your existing card stays valid with the old address printed on it. If you want a card that shows the new address, request a duplicate license for $10 at a branch office.6SCDMV. Fees
A duplicate isn’t required. If your license is nearing expiration, or you want to upgrade to a REAL ID anyway, combining errands is reasonable.
What Updates Automatically, and What Doesn’t
Reporting a new address to the SCDMV also updates your vehicle registration records, and new registration cards go to your new address.2SCDMV. Change My Address or Name A separate filing for your titles isn’t needed.
Under the National Voter Registration Act, your SCDMV address change is forwarded to election officials as a voter registration update unless you opt out during the transaction.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 52 USC 20504 – Simultaneous Application for Voter Registration and Application for Motor Vehicle Driver’s License Most people will want the automatic update; the option to decline is there if you don’t.
Two things do not update on their own. A USPS change of address form does not touch your SCDMV record; mail forwarding and driver’s license address are separate systems.8USPS. Policies are tied to where the vehicle is garaged, moving to a new ZIP code can shift your premium, and failing to report a new garaging address can give an insurer grounds to deny a claim.
A Note on REAL ID
Changing your address alone does not require a REAL ID, and the online and mail options work for a standard address change. If you want to upgrade at the same time, that has to happen in person and requires additional documentation, including proof of identity and citizenship, your Social Security number, and two proofs of your South Carolina address from different sources.9South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
