How to Change Your Address on Your Florida Driver’s License

To change your address on your Florida driver’s license, order a replacement card showing the new address within 30 days of moving. You can do it online through the MyDMV Portal at flhsmv.gov or in person at a county tax collector’s office. The fee is $25, and you’ll need two documents that prove where you now live.¹

The 30-Day Deadline

Florida Statutes § 322.19 gives you 30 calendar days after changing your residential or mailing address to obtain a replacement license or ID card reflecting the new information. The statute requires you to actually obtain the replacement, not just send notice, and the written request to the department must include your old address, new address, and driver license or ID number.²

Miss the deadline and you’re looking at a $30 nonmoving traffic violation under § 318.18(2). No points on your record, but it’s an easy citation during a routine stop, since the officer can see your address in the state database and compare it to the card you hand over.³

One exception matters for students. If you hold a valid student ID from a Florida educational institution, the law presumes your permanent address hasn’t changed, so a college student moving between dorms or off-campus apartments generally doesn’t have to update the license every semester.²

Documents You Need

Florida requires two proof-of-address documents, both showing your new residential address: one household information document and one supporting document from an approved list.⁴

The household document has to be one of these:

Deed or mortgage
Property tax record
Recent monthly mortgage statement
Rental or lease agreement

The supporting document has to be one of these:

Florida voter registration card
Utility bill dated within the last 60 days (water, gas, electric, phone, cable)
Financial statement dated within the last 60 days (bank, credit card, or investment account)
Employer documentation dated within the last 60 days (pay stub or W-2)
Insurance policy or bill for homeowner’s or auto insurance dated within the last 60 days
Florida vehicle or vessel documentation
Government-issued document dated within the last 60 days (federal, state, county, or city)

Living with someone whose name is on the bills? You can’t just bring their paperwork. You’ll need a Certification of Address form (HSMV 71120), signed by the property owner or primary resident confirming that you live there, plus that person’s two documents.⁴

Doing It Online Through the MyDMV Portal

The fastest option is the MyDMV Portal at flhsmv.gov. Log in with your driver license number and the last four digits of your Social Security number, pick the replacement option, enter your new address, and pay the $25 fee. Clean records, about five minutes.¹

Not everyone qualifies. Florida lets you use the online convenience service every other transaction, so if your last renewal or replacement was handled online, the next one has to be done in person.⁵ You’ll also need to visit an office if you’re combining the address update with a new photo or a name change.

Save the confirmation email after the transaction. That’s your proof the update is in process. The replacement card arrives at the new address within 7 to 10 business days. If it doesn’t turn up, check with your mail carrier first, because FLHSMV won’t reissue the card until 30 days have passed.

Doing It in Person at a Tax Collector’s Office

Florida handles driver license services through county tax collector offices rather than standalone DMV branches. Many counties let you book an appointment online, and appointment holders are seen ahead of walk-ins, so it’s worth checking your county’s tax collector website before you go.

Bring both proof-of-address documents and your current license. The clerk verifies your residency, updates the state record, takes a new photo if needed, and collects the $25 fee.¹ You leave with a temporary paper license while the permanent card is produced and mailed, again within 7 to 10 business days.

One thing to know if you’re flying soon: the temporary paper license is not accepted at TSA airport checkpoints.⁶ Time the visit around any travel, or plan to use your passport.

REAL ID at the Same Time

REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. A Florida license without the gold star in the upper right corner won’t get you through TSA for a domestic flight.⁷ Since an address change means you’re replacing the card anyway, it’s a natural moment to upgrade if you haven’t.

Upgrading to REAL ID has to be done in person. Bring your proof-of-address documents plus identity documents, typically a birth certificate or passport along with your Social Security card. If your current license already has the gold star and you’re only changing the address, the online portal is fine and the new card keeps the star.

Acceptable alternatives to REAL ID for flying include a U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, or a DHS trusted traveler card like Global Entry.⁶

What the License Update Doesn’t Cover

Changing the address on your license doesn’t automatically change it anywhere else. A few things to handle separately:

Vehicle registration. Florida requires you to notify the department of the address change on your vehicle registration within 30 days, providing the license plate number, VIN or title number, vehicle year and make, and your full name.⁸ FLHSMV treats the license and the title/registration as separate updates within the same 30-day window.⁹

Auto insurance. Florida doesn’t set a statutory deadline for telling your insurer, but your address feeds directly into your premium (rates vary by ZIP code for traffic density, theft, and weather risk), and an outdated policy address can delay claims. Most insurers handle it through their app in a few minutes.

Voter registration. Under the National Voter Registration Act, an address change filed through a motor vehicle agency doubles as a voter registration update unless you specifically opt out. The system asks you during the transaction, whether online or in person.¹⁰

Selective Service. If you’re a male between 18 and 25, federal law requires notice of an address change within 10 days of moving — a tighter window than Florida’s 30 days for the license. Update online at sss.gov with your Selective Service number, Social Security number, and date of birth. The requirement ends on January 1 of the year you turn 26.¹¹

IRS. File Form 8822 (Change of Address) separately from your tax return so the IRS sends correspondence to the right place. Processing runs four to six weeks, and any penalties or interest keep accruing whether you receive notices or not.¹²

Social Security. If you’re receiving benefits, update your mailing address through the “my Social Security” portal. If you’re not, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.¹³

The two with hard deadlines — Selective Service at 10 days and your driver license at 30 — are the ones to knock out first.
