To make a change of address on your Georgia driver’s license, you have 60 days after moving within the state, or 30 days if you’ve relocated to Georgia from elsewhere.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Change Address or Name If your current license is a REAL ID with more than six months left before expiration, you can handle the update online or through the DDS 2 GO mobile app. If it isn’t, you’ll need to visit a Customer Service Center in person.
Who Can Update Online or by App
Georgia DDS limits the online and mobile options to people who meet every one of the following: you hold a REAL ID-compliant license or ID (look for the gold or black star in the upper right corner), you’re a U.S. citizen, you’re a current Georgia resident, and you’re at least 18.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Change Address or Name Non-U.S. citizens must go in person for any license transaction, regardless of REAL ID status.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Address Change FAQs
There’s one more requirement that trips people up: your license must have more than six months remaining before it expires. If it doesn’t, DDS treats the request as a renewal instead of an address change, with a different process and a fee attached.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Address Change FAQs
Proof of Residence You’ll Need
REAL ID holders need one document showing the new residential address. Non-REAL ID holders updating in person need two.3Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License
Acceptable documents include utility bills, a mortgage statement, a lease, vehicle registration or insurance cards showing your address, and correspondence from a federal, state, or local government agency. Each must show your name and new residential address, and be dated or postmarked within the past six months. Government-issued documents can be from the current or preceding calendar year.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Rule 375-3-1-.02 Applications and Supporting Documentation P.O. File Your USPS Change of Address First
Before you submit anything to DDS, file a change of address with the United States Postal Service. DDS verifies your new address against the USPS database, and if the postal service doesn’t recognize it yet, your request can stall.3Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License Filing online costs $1.25 for identity verification; filing in person at any post office is free.5USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address
The USPS filing only redirects your mail. It doesn’t update your license, vehicle registration, or voter registration. Those are all separate.5USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address
Updating Online
If you qualify, the DDS online portal is the fastest route. Create an account or log in, go to the address change section, and complete a secure video verification to confirm your identity. The self-service portal is open around the clock.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Change Address or Name
If you’d rather not do the video verification yourself, you can create the account and then call the DDS Contact Center at (678) 413-8858 to complete the verification with an agent. Contact center hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Change Address or Name
Updating Through the DDS 2 GO App
The mobile app carries the same REAL ID requirement as the website. Download DDS 2 GO from the Apple App Store or Google Play, sign in, tap Services, then Address Change, and follow the prompts.3Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License DDS runs the address against the USPS database and processes the change from there.
Updating in Person
A Customer Service Center visit is the only option if you don’t have a REAL ID, aren’t a U.S. citizen, or have fewer than six months left on your license. Anyone who simply prefers the counter can go this route as well. Locations are listed on the DDS website.
Bring your current license or ID and the required proof-of-residence documents (two if you don’t have a REAL ID).3Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License Staff will verify the documents, update your record, and take a new photo. You’ll leave with a temporary paper license while the permanent card is produced and mailed.
Fees
Your first address change during the current license term is free, provided the license has more than six months left before it expires.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms A second address change during the same term is processed as a renewal, which costs $32 for a regular license and starts a new eight-year term.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Address Change FAQs
The same renewal treatment kicks in if your license is within 150 days of expiration, even on a first address change. The fee is $32, or $27 if you renew online or through DDS 2 GO with the $5 electronic discount.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms
One quirk: the online portal doesn’t let you renew and change your address in a single transaction. If you need both, you’ll have to run them separately.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Address Change FAQs
When Your New License Arrives
For online and app updates, Georgia.gov estimates two to three weeks by mail.3Georgia.gov. Change Address on an Existing Georgia Driver’s License The DDS FAQ gives a more conservative window of up to 45 days from when you receive your temporary document.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewals FAQs If the change is processed alongside a renewal, add another 14 to 21 days for address validation.8Georgia.gov. Renew a Georgia Driver’s License
Keep your previous license and any temporary paper ID until the new card arrives. If nothing shows up after 45 days, call the DDS Contact Center at (678) 413-8400 to check the status.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewals FAQs
What Happens If You Miss the 60-Day Deadline
Georgia law requires you to notify DDS of an address change, but it also specifies that failing to update your address does not invalidate your license.9Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-33 – Change of Address or Name on License Consequences still exist. You can be cited during a traffic stop, and renewal notices and other DDS correspondence will go to the old address until you fix it.
Other Addresses to Update at the Same Time
Your license is only one of several records tied to your address.
Vehicle Registration
Once your license address is corrected, update your vehicle registration through the Georgia Department of Revenue’s DRIVES e-Services portal or at your county tag office. You’ll need your plate number or VIN and proof of residency.10Georgia Department of Revenue. Change Address on Registration
Voter Registration
DDS transmits customer information to the Secretary of State’s office for voter registration purposes, and your information is shared with your county voter registrar unless you opt out. DDS itself doesn’t directly register voters, so confirm with your county that your voter record reflects the new address, particularly ahead of an election.11Georgia Department of Driver Services. Section 4 – Other Services and Information
Auto Insurance
Contact your auto insurer as soon as you know your new address. Even an in-state move can shift your premium, since insurers price policies partly on where the car is garaged. An outdated address on your policy can complicate a claim.
