You’ll need your Michigan driver’s license or state ID number and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The same submission updates your voter registration automatically, but your vehicle registration, auto insurance, and USPS mail forwarding are separate tasks.
How Soon You Have to Report the Move
MCL 257.315 requires you to “immediately” notify the Secretary of State when you move to a new residence before your license or ID expires.1Michigan Legislature. The rule applies to anyone holding a Michigan driver’s license or chauffeur’s license.
Not reporting your new address is a civil infraction under the Michigan Vehicle Code, with a fine of up to $100 plus court costs and assessments.2Michigan Courts. What to Have Ready Before You Start
Every method asks for the same core information: your Michigan driver’s license or state ID number and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The mail form asks for more. Form ED-109W collects your date of birth, daytime phone number, gender, full legal name, and both your old and new residential addresses. It also includes citizenship and age-eligibility questions tied to voter registration. Sign and date the form or it won’t be processed.4Michigan Secretary of State. Online
The Secretary of State’s online portal is the fastest option. Log in, confirm the new address, and submit. The system asks whether you also want to update your vehicle registration at the same time. There’s no fee.3Michigan Department of State. Change of Address

One caveat about the mail option. The Secretary of State sends a verification letter to your old address confirming the change, and that letter contains your new address. In Person
Any Secretary of State branch office can update your address. The state strongly recommends scheduling ahead. Walk-ins are accepted, but staff will assign you the next available slot, which could be later that day or the following business day. What Arrives After You Submit
The update itself costs nothing. If you carry a standard driver’s license or state ID, the Secretary of State mails a sticker with your updated address to place on the back of the card. Expect it within 14 days. If you carry an enhanced license or ID, you’ll get a brand-new card with the updated address printed on it rather than a sticker.3Michigan Department of State. Vehicle Registration Doesn’t Update Automatically
Changing your driver’s license address does not change your vehicle registration address. The online portal offers to do both at once, but only if you opt in. If you skip that prompt, or if you submit your license change by mail, you’ll need to update the registration in a separate step.3Michigan Department of State. Once you submit, you can download and print the updated registration directly.
Voter Registration Updates on Its Own
Michigan law requires the same address on your voter registration and your driver’s license, so the Secretary of State updates your voter record to match the new residential address you provide. The old registration becomes invalid for voting.4Michigan Secretary of State. ED-109W Michigan Change of Address and Voter Registration If you’ve moved to a different city or township, your registration transfers to the new local clerk’s jurisdiction and your assigned precinct changes.
You don’t need to file a separate voter registration form after moving. Just update your address well before any election so there’s no confusion about where to vote.
Tell Your Auto Insurer Separately
The Secretary of State handles your license, registration, and voter records. Your insurance company is on you. Insurers price policies partly on where a vehicle is parked overnight, so an unreported move means you’re carrying an inaccurate garaging address. If you file a claim after an accident, the insurer can use the mismatch as grounds to deny the claim or void the policy. No state agency prompts this update, but the financial exposure from skipping it is real.
USPS Mail Forwarding Isn’t a Substitute
A USPS change-of-address order forwards your mail and does nothing else. The Postal Service is explicit: the order only changes your address with the Post Office, and government agencies like the Secretary of State still need to be updated separately.6USPS. If You’re Moving to Michigan From Another State
The steps above apply to Michigan residents who are moving within the state. If you’re relocating to Michigan from elsewhere, you have to visit a Secretary of State branch office in person to apply for a Michigan driver’s license, vehicle title, and registration, with no grace period.7Michigan Department of State.
