To change your Colorado driver license address, notify the Division of Motor Vehicles within 30 days of moving. You can do it in about five minutes online through the myDMV portal at mydmv.colorado.gov, by mailing Form DR 2285, or by bringing the form to a state driver license office by appointment.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. The 30-Day Deadline
Colorado law requires anyone holding a driver license, instruction permit, or state ID card to notify the DMV within 30 days of moving from the address on file.3Justia. Colorado Code 42-2-119 – Notices – Change of Address or Name The clock starts on the actual move, not when you sign a lease or close on a house. Notice has to be in writing or submitted electronically through the department’s website.
Missing the deadline is a class B traffic infraction. The fine is $15 with a $6 surcharge, and no points go on your driving record.4FindLaw. Colorado Code 42-4-1701 – Traffic Offenses and Infractions Classified – Penalties – Surcharges The bigger risk is practical: renewal notices, court correspondence, and registration paperwork mailed to your old address may never reach you.
What to Have Ready
Whichever method you use, you’ll need:
- Your Colorado driver license or ID number
- Your date of birth
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
- Your new residential street address (not a P.O. Box)
- Your new mailing address, if different from the residential one
You do not need a utility bill, lease, or other proof-of-address document for a standard address update. The system verifies you using the three data points above.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Help with Address Change Process
Changing Your Address Online
The fastest route is myDMV at mydmv.colorado.gov. Log in and choose the address change option under Driver License services.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Change Your Address The portal walks you through three screens.
First, verification. Enter your license number, date of birth, and last four SSN digits, check the certification box, and continue.
Second, address entry. Enter your zip code, and the system pulls up a list of cities associated with it for you to pick from. Type your residential address, then check a box if your mailing address is the same. If it isn’t, enter the mailing address in the separate field. Remember that the residential address must be a physical street address; P.O. Boxes go in the mailing field only.
Third, review. Check the displayed information, edit anything that’s wrong, then confirm. Save or print the confirmation number that appears at the end.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Help with Address Change Process

You Won’t Get a New Card Automatically
Updating your address changes the state’s database. It does not trigger a new physical license, and none will be mailed to you.1Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Change Your Address The DMV’s instruction is to print a label with your new address and stick it on the back of your current card. That satisfies identification requirements until the card expires or you decide to replace it.6Colorado Department of Revenue. DR 2285 – Change of Address Form
If you want a card that shows the new address on its face, you’ll need to visit a driver license office and pay $12.30 for a first duplicate.2Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. State DMV Fees This is optional.
Vehicle Registration Is a Separate Update
Changing the address on your driver license does not update the address on your vehicle registration. They are two separate records.6Colorado Department of Revenue. DR 2285 – Change of Address Form Vehicle registration address changes go through the county motor vehicle office in the county where you now live, or through myDMV under Vehicle Services by selecting the option to add or change a vehicle address.8Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. FAQs – Registration If your move crossed county lines, different registration taxes may apply, so handle this before renewal to avoid a surprise bill.
Voter Registration Usually Updates on Its Own
Colorado transmits DMV address changes to county clerks, who check whether your voter record needs updating.9Colorado Secretary of State. Voter Registration FAQs If the clerk has a complete record, you’ll get a mailed notice confirming registration at the new address, with 20 days to decline if you don’t want the update. If you moved to a new county and have an election coming up, confirm your registration through the Secretary of State’s voter lookup rather than assuming the transfer went through.
