How to Change Your Driver’s License Address in Texas

To change your driver’s license address in Texas, update it within 30 days of moving through the Texas by Texas (TxT) online portal, by mailing Form DL-64, or in person by appointment at a Department of Public Safety office.¹ The fee is $11 online or in person and $10 by mail.²

What to Have Ready

Keep your current license in front of you. The online system asks for your full driver license number, the last four digits of your Social Security Number, and the 20-digit Audit Number printed at the bottom of your card (sometimes labeled “DD”). If the card is too worn to read the Audit Number, you’re better off requesting a replacement.

For an in-person visit, bring two printed documents proving you live at the new address. Both must show your name and residential address, and at least one must confirm you have lived in Texas for at least 30 days. A current lease or mortgage statement, a utility bill from the last 180 days, a bank or credit card statement, a recent W-2 or 1099, a Texas voter registration card, and a current auto insurance card all qualify.³

Change It Online Through TxT

The fastest route is the Texas by Texas portal.⁴ Create a TxT account or sign in, choose the address change option, enter your identifiers and new address, and pay the $11 fee by credit card or electronic check. That $11 includes a $1 administrative fee that DPS waives on mail submissions.²

Not everyone qualifies. DPS limits the online option to U.S. citizens whose license is current, meaning it cannot be expired, suspended, or revoked.⁵ If any of that describes you, use one of the other methods.

Change It by Mail

Download Form DL-64 from the DPS website and fill it out in black or blue ink.⁶ The form asks for your old address, new residential address, and driver license number, with separate fields for mailing address and physical residence if you use a P.O. Box.

Send the completed form with a $10 check or money order made out to the Texas Department of Public Safety:

Do not send cash. Use a mailing method with tracking. Mail submissions take longer than online changes because DPS processes them by hand.

Change It in Person

Every DPS driver license office runs on appointments.⁷ Book a slot through the DPS scheduling site. Same-day appointments are sometimes available, but don’t count on it during peak periods.⁸

Bring your current license and two residency documents. The $11 fee is payable at the counter. In person is the best route if your situation is complicated, such as a name change happening at the same time, since a DPS employee can review your documents and resolve issues on the spot.

What You Get and When Your New Card Arrives

After you complete the change, DPS issues a temporary paper license valid for 60 days.⁹ If you filed online, print it and carry it. Law enforcement accepts the temporary license during traffic stops.

Your permanent card typically arrives by mail within two to three weeks, though processing times fluctuate with volume. You can check the status through the DPS “Where’s My Driver License or ID Card?” tool using your eight-digit driver license number and date of birth.¹⁰¹¹

If You Miss the 30-Day Deadline

Failing to update the address is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200.¹² Most people discover the problem during a traffic stop when the officer sees an old address on the license. A court can dismiss the charge if you correct the address within 20 working days and pay a reimbursement fee of no more than $20, and the court may waive that fee entirely.¹

There’s also a practical cost. An outdated address means DPS renewal notices go to your old home, and a missed renewal is on you.

What This Doesn’t Cover

Changing your driver license address does not update your vehicle registration. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles handles that separately through its online portal, where you enter your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN; online changes take effect within two business days.¹³

It also does not update your voter registration, despite the common assumption. Texas requires a separate update through the Secretary of State’s office, which you can do online if you’re already registered.¹⁴ The deadline to register for any Texas election is 30 days before Election Day.¹⁵ Moving to a different county matters most here, since your old county’s rolls won’t transfer and you may end up casting only a provisional ballot at a new polling place.

Finally, call your auto insurance company. Premiums are partly based on where you park overnight, so a new zip code can raise or lower your rate, and a mismatch between your policy address and your actual address can create trouble at claim time. Most carriers handle the update online or by phone in a few minutes.
