What to Gather Before You Start
You’ll need three things in hand before your first stop:

Start With Social Security
Social Security has to come first because the Texas Department of Public Safety electronically verifies your Social Security number when you apply for a new driver’s license. If SSA still shows your maiden name, DPS can’t issue the new card.4Department of Public Safety. Social Security Number (SSN)
You can start the application online and finish by mail or in person, or complete a paper Form SS-5 from the start. Update Your Texas Driver’s License Within 30 Days
Once SSA has processed the change, Texas law gives you 30 days to update your driver’s license or state ID.7Texas Public Law. Update Your U.S. Passport
Passport cost depends on timing. If your passport was issued less than a year ago and your name change also happened within that same year, use Form DS-5504 to get a corrected passport for free. Miss that one-year window and the free option is gone. You’ll usually renew by mail with Form DS-82 for $130 for a passport book. File Taxes Under Whatever Name SSA Currently Has

Update Everything Else
Once your Social Security card, driver’s license, and passport all show the new name, everything else falls into place using those documents.
Voter Registration
Texas offers a free online tool through the Secretary of State’s office. You’ll need your driver’s license number, Social Security number, and Voter Unique Identifier (VUID), which your county voter registrar can provide if it isn’t on your registration card.15Texas Secretary of State. Vehicle Title and Registration
Contact your county tax assessor-collector’s office, which handles vehicle title work in Texas. Bring your updated driver’s license and marriage license. Fees and procedures vary by county.
Banks and Credit Cards
Most banks and card issuers want you in a branch or on the phone with your new driver’s license and certified marriage license. Start with accounts tied to direct deposit, bill pay, and recurring charges. Employer and Payroll
Tell HR so they can update personnel records, your work email, business cards, and benefits. Your employer will need to see the new Social Security card for payroll and tax reporting.
Insurance, Leases, and Professional Licenses
Update health, auto, home, and life insurance. If you hold a professional license from a Texas state board, check its rules — many require notification within 30 days. Update your name on any leases or deeds by contacting your landlord or mortgage servicer with a copy of your marriage license.
