To change your last name after marriage in Virginia, work through the agencies in a fixed order: Social Security first, then the Virginia DMV, then your passport, taxes, financial accounts, credit bureaus, voter registration, and everything else. The order matters because most agencies verify your name against the one before it, so skipping ahead usually means starting over. Plan on a few weeks from start to finish.
Gather Your Documents First
Everything depends on a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Update Your Social Security Card First
The Social Security Administration has to go first. Every other agency checks your name against SSA records, so nothing else moves until this one is done.
You can often start through your personal my Social Security account online. If online service isn’t available for your situation, begin the application on the SSA website and schedule an appointment at a local office or card center to finish. There’s no fee. Your Social Security number doesn’t change. Your new card arrives by mail within 5 to 10 business days after the SSA verifies your documents.4Social Security Administration. Replace Social Security Card You don’t have to wait for the physical card to reach the DMV, but the SSA has to have processed the change in their system first.
Change Your Name at the Virginia DMV
Once the SSA has processed the update, move to the DMV. You can begin the application through the DMV’s online name change portal, which sends a confirmation email to bring with you to a customer service center.5Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Update Your U.S. Passport
The passport path depends on timing. If your name change happened less than one year after your most recent passport was issued, you can mail Form DS-5504 with your current passport, your certified marriage certificate, and a new passport photo. If more than a year has passed since your passport was issued or your name was legally changed, you’ll renew instead. Most people can renew by mail using Form DS-82 if their current passport is undamaged, was issued when they were 16 or older, and was issued within the last 15 years. Submit the form with your current passport, marriage certificate, a new photo, and the standard renewal fee. If you have travel coming up, check processing times before sending your only passport away. Expedited service or waiting until after the trip may be the better call.
Taxes and Payroll
The IRS doesn’t need separate notice of your name change, but the name on your tax return has to match what the SSA has on file. If you changed your name partway through the tax year and haven’t updated the SSA by filing time, use your former name on the return. You can still file as married filing jointly without changing your Social Security card first. Once the SSA processes your new name, ask your employer to make sure your W-2 reflects the name now on your Social Security card. Submit a new Form W-4 to your employer with your updated name. The IRS requires the name on your W-4 to match your Social Security card exactly, so handle this soon after your new card arrives.
Financial Accounts and Credit Reports
With your new Social Security card and Virginia license in hand, contact your banks, credit card issuers, and any investment or retirement account providers. Most will ask for a copy of your marriage certificate and your new government-issued ID. Each institution has its own process, which makes this step more tedious than difficult.
Credit bureaus don’t learn about the change from your banks or the SSA. You have to contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion individually.
