Update Your Address Online for Free
Current Missouri license holders can change the address on file through the Department of Revenue’s online change-of-address portal at no cost.1MyDMV – MO.gov. Change Driver License Address The online update changes the address the state has associated with your license. It does not produce a new card. You’ll keep carrying the license you already have, with the old address on it, until you go into an office for a replacement.
One boundary worth flagging: Form 5805, which you may see referenced on the Department of Revenue’s website, changes your address for motor vehicle registration and income tax records. Get a New Card at a License Office
If you want a physical license that shows where you actually live, you have to visit a Missouri license office in person.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Bring your current Missouri driver’s license and two documents from separate categories that show your new residential address. Acceptable proofs include:
- A utility bill (electric, gas, or water) in your name at the new address
- A bank or financial statement showing your name and current address
- A mortgage document or lease agreement for the new residence
- A voter registration card reflecting the new address
- An auto insurance policy listing your current address
Each document must be the most recently issued version, and the two must come from different categories. Two utility bills from different providers won’t do it. Originals or certified copies only.
Your Social Security number is likely already verified in the Department of Revenue’s system, in which case you can confirm it verbally at the counter rather than bringing a document.4Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Licensing Checklist If the electronic verification with the Social Security Administration fails, you’ll need to bring a physical document showing your number or visit an SSA office to sort it out.
Duplicate or Early Renewal
How the office processes the transaction depends on how close your license is to expiring. If it’s more than six months from the expiration date, you’ll pay for a duplicate, and the new card carries the same expiration date as your old one. If it’s within six months of expiring, you can apply for an early renewal instead and walk out with a fresh expiration date.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Early renewal is usually the better deal if you’re close to the cutoff, since it saves you from paying for a duplicate and then a renewal a few months later.
What New Missouri Residents Need to Bring
If you’re moving to Missouri from another state, this isn’t really an address change. You’re applying for a Missouri license for the first time, so the document list is longer. Your out-of-state license must be valid or expired no more than 184 days.4Missouri Department of Revenue. Driver Licensing Checklist
You’ll need documents from four categories:
- Proof of identity and lawful presence, such as a valid U.S. passport, certified U.S. birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, or a Permanent Resident Card. Non-citizens with other statuses have additional options.
- A physical document showing your Social Security number: a signed, unlaminated Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing your full name and complete number. None of these can be altered in any way.
- Two documents from separate categories proving your Missouri residential address, drawn from the same list above.
Fees and Payment
Updating your address in the Department of Revenue’s records is free, whether you do it online or in person.1MyDMV – MO.gov. Change Driver License Address The fee only kicks in when you want a new physical card. A duplicate license typically runs between $10 and $12, depending on the type of credential you hold.
License offices take most debit cards (Visa and MasterCard) and several credit cards (American Express, MasterCard, and Discover). Visa credit cards are not accepted. Card transactions carry a small convenience fee: $1.00 for anything $50 or less, and 2.75% above $50. Cash and checks are fine too.
Consider REAL ID at the Same Visit
Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable ID such as a passport is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.5TSA. REAL ID A REAL ID-compliant Missouri card has a gold star in the upper-right corner.
If yours doesn’t have one, the address-change visit is a natural time to upgrade. The document requirements overlap with what you’re already bringing. If your current legal name doesn’t match the name on your identity document, you’ll also need documentation of the change, such as a marriage certificate or court order.6Missouri Department of Revenue. Voter Registration Moves With You
Under federal law, changing your address at a license office also updates your voter registration unless you opt out. The office has to transmit the change to election officials within 10 days, or within five days if you’re within five days of a voter registration deadline.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 52 USC Ch. 205 – National Voter Registration Updating only through the online Department of Revenue portal does not necessarily trigger the automatic voter update, so if you go that route, plan to update your registration separately through the Missouri Secretary of State.
How Soon Do You Have to Do This?
New residents from out of state should apply for a Missouri license as soon as they establish residency.8Missouri Department of Revenue. Enforcement on ordinary license holders is rare, but an outdated address can create problems during traffic stops, insurance claims, and any court proceeding where your address of record matters.
Commercial driver’s license holders have a firm deadline. If you hold a CDL and move to a new state, federal regulations require you to apply for a CDL from the new state within 30 days of establishing your new home.9eCFR.
