To change your name after marriage in Arkansas, work through the agencies in order: get a certified marriage record, update your Social Security card, then your Arkansas driver’s license, and only then move on to your passport, vehicle title, voter registration, and financial accounts. The order matters. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration checks your information against Social Security records before issuing a new license, so a Social Security update that hasn’t gone through yet will stop you at the DFA counter.
Start With a Certified Marriage Record
Every agency you visit will want to see a certified copy of your marriage record, so get several. After the ceremony, your officiant returns the completed license to the County Clerk in the county where it was issued. Arkansas law gives them 60 days to return it, used or not.1Pulaski County Circuit Clerk. Marriage License Once the clerk records it, it becomes your official marriage record.
Certified copies are available from either the County Clerk or the Arkansas Department of Health. County Clerks charge $5.00 per copy.1Pulaski County Circuit Clerk. Change Your Arkansas Driver’s License or State ID

This is also a good moment to upgrade to a Real ID if you don’t have one already. As of May 7, 2025, a Real ID is required to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings. A Real ID needs additional documents beyond the standard name change:8Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Real ID

What to Do About Taxes and the IRS
There is no separate IRS form for an individual name change after marriage. Form 8822 is for a change of address, not a name change.12Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8822, Change of Address The IRS pulls your name from SSA records, so once the SSA has your update, the IRS will match it automatically at filing time.
The rule that matters: the name on your tax return has to match the name on your Social Security card at the time you file. If you file before the SSA has processed the change, use your former name to avoid refund delays.13Internal Revenue Service. Name Changes and Social Security Number Matching Issues A mismatch between your return and your SSA record is one of the most common causes of delayed refunds.
Update Your Voter Registration
If you’re registered under your former name, update your voter registration so there’s no confusion at the polls. The National Mail Voter Registration Form accepts name change updates; complete it and mail it to your county clerk, following the Arkansas-specific instructions included with the form.14U.S. Election Assistance Commission. National Mail Voter Registration Form Send it in well before any upcoming election, since most states require registration changes at least 15 to 30 days before Election Day.
Banks, Employer, and Everything Else
With Social Security, driver’s license, and passport handled, the rest is administrative. Visit your bank or credit union in person with your new driver’s license and Social Security card to update checking, savings, and credit card accounts. Most institutions do it on the spot.
You’ll also want to update your name with your employer’s payroll and HR department, health and auto insurance providers, utility companies, your cell phone carrier, and any state professional licensing board you’re registered with. None of these have a formal legal process; they just want to see the new ID and, in some cases, the marriage record. Keep a few certified copies of the marriage record on hand. You’ll need to show it more than once.
