To change your name after marriage in PA, you use a certified copy of your marriage certificate to update Social Security first, then your Pennsylvania driver’s license, your passport, your vehicle records, and everything else tied to your legal name. One catch shapes the whole process: Pennsylvania’s marriage-based shortcut only covers taking your spouse’s surname as-is. Hyphenating, blending both names, or moving your maiden name into your middle slot requires a separate court petition.

Decide Your New Legal Name Before You Start

Pennsylvania law draws a hard line. Swap your current last name for your spouse’s last name, and the marriage certificate is all you need. Do anything else, and you fall under the state’s judicial name change statute, which makes it unlawful to assume a different name without court approval unless a specific exception applies. The marriage exception only covers adopting your spouse’s surname.¹

So if you want to become “Jane Smith-Jones” instead of “Jane Jones,” or to drop your middle name and put your maiden name there, you need a court order from the Court of Common Pleas in your county. Settle on the exact name you want before visiting any agency. If it’s anything other than your spouse’s surname, jump to the court petition section first.

Get Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate

Every agency wants a certified copy: an official government-issued record with a raised or embossed seal. This is not the decorative certificate you may have signed at the ceremony, and it’s not your marriage license, which is only the application to marry.

Contact the Register of Wills or Clerk of the Orphans’ Court in the Pennsylvania county where you applied for your marriage license. Pennsylvania lets you apply in any county and marry anywhere in the commonwealth, so the issuing county may not be the county where the ceremony happened.² Fees and turnaround vary by county. Order at least two or three copies. You will often need to submit them to different agencies at the same time.

Update Social Security First

Start with the Social Security Administration. Other agencies verify your identity against SSA records, so updating your driver’s license first can create a mismatch that stalls your application. There is no fee.

Depending on your state and account status, you may be able to handle the whole change through your personal my Social Security account online. Otherwise, start the application online or visit a local SSA office in person. Bring your certified marriage certificate and a document proving your identity, such as a current passport or driver’s license.³

Your new card arrives by mail in 5 to 10 business days.³ You don’t have to wait for the physical card before moving on to PennDOT. Once SSA’s electronic records reflect your new name, usually within a day or two, you can proceed.

A Note on Tax Filing

The name on your tax return must match SSA’s records. If you’ve already updated with SSA, file under your new married name. If you haven’t, file under your former name to avoid processing delays.⁴ This matters most for name changes late in the year.

Update Your Pennsylvania Driver’s License or REAL ID

Once SSA has processed the change, visit a PennDOT Driver License Center in person. You cannot update your name on a Pennsylvania license online or by mail.⁵

Which form you use, and whether you pay a fee, depends on when your passport was issued relative to your name change.

If your passport was issued within the last year and your legal name change is also within the last year, submit Form DS-5504 by mail. No fee, unless you want expedited processing, which costs an extra $60.⁹
If more than a year has passed since either your passport was issued or your name changed, use Form DS-82 to renew by mail if your most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years. If it’s older than that, apply in person using Form DS-11.⁹

Prioritize this if you have travel coming up. Standard processing takes several weeks, and even the no-fee DS-5504 route means mailing your current passport and marriage certificate to the State Department.

Update Your Vehicle Title and Registration

If you own a car registered in Pennsylvania, use PennDOT Form MV-41A, the Application for Correction or Change of Name.¹⁰

A corrected registration card alone is free. A corrected certificate of title requires submitting your current title and a fee listed on PennDOT’s Schedule of Fees (Form MV-70S).¹⁰ Updating the title is worth doing if you plan to sell or trade in the vehicle, since a name mismatch between your ID and title can complicate the transaction.

Update Your Other Records

Voter registration: update through your county elections office. To vote under your new name in the next election, submit the change at least 15 days before election day.
Employer: notify HR so payroll, tax withholding, and benefits reflect your new name.
Banks and financial institutions: bring your updated ID and marriage certificate to your branch and update accounts, credit cards, and investments.
Insurance: contact your health, auto, and life insurance providers. Mismatches between insurance and ID cause problems at claim time.
Professional licenses: if you hold a license through the Pennsylvania Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs, submit your change through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) or contact your board directly.
