Get a Certified Marriage Certificate
The decorative certificate from your ceremony will not work anywhere. You need a certified copy from the county clerk’s office where your marriage license was filed. Once the SSA confirms the change in their system, other agencies can verify it.
Update Your Texas Driver License Within 30 Days
Once Social Security reflects your new name, Texas law gives you 30 days to update your driver license or ID card.4State of Texas. Book an appointment through the DPS website before you go. Walk-in waits can eat a whole morning. Bring your current driver license, the original certified marriage certificate (not a photocopy), and proof that your Social Security record has been updated. REAL ID and the Document Chain
If your license is REAL ID-compliant and you want to keep that status, you need to show a chain of documents connecting your birth name to your new married name. Update Your U.S. Passport
There is no legal deadline for updating your passport, but traveling under a name that does not match your ticket causes problems at the gate. The form and fee depend on timing.
If your name change happened less than one year after your most recent passport was issued, use Form DS-5504 to get a corrected passport at no charge. Expedited processing costs $60 extra. If you married late in the year and have not updated your name with the SSA before filing season, file your return under your former name. Update Your Other Records
Once Social Security, your driver license, and your passport are handled, work through everything else tied to your old name. None of these carry statutory deadlines, but leaving records inconsistent creates headaches later.
- Voter registration. Texas does not offer online voter registration updates. Print the Application for a Voter Registration Certificate from the Secretary of State’s website, complete it with your new name, and mail or deliver it to your county voter registrar. Updates must be submitted at least 30 days before an election to take effect for that election.
- Vehicle title and registration. Contact your local county tax assessor-collector’s office. You will typically need your certified marriage certificate and current ID.
- Financial accounts. Banks, credit unions, credit card companies, and investment accounts each have their own process, but most want a copy of your marriage certificate and updated ID. Batch these if you can.

If Your Marriage Is a Common Law Marriage
This standard process assumes a formal marriage with a license. Texas has no specific law granting an automatic name change after an informal (common law) marriage. If you filed a Declaration of Informal Marriage with your county clerk, the Texas Department of State Health Services may issue a marriage verification letter, which the DPS accepts as proof for a driver license update.
