How to Change Your Name in Kentucky After Marriage: SSA, DMV, Passport

To change your name in Kentucky after marriage, order certified copies of your marriage certificate, update your Social Security record first, then update your Kentucky driver’s license within 10 days, then your U.S. passport, and then work through your employer, tax, vehicle, banking, and voter records. The order matters because each agency verifies your identity against the last one.

Order Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate

Every update traces back to one document. After your ceremony, the officiant returns the completed license to the county clerk’s office where it was issued, and the clerk records it.¹ Once it’s recorded, you can request certified copies in person or by mail. Fees are typically around $6 per copy and can vary by county.²

Order at least three or four. Agencies often require an original certified copy rather than a photocopy, and having several on hand lets you send updates in parallel instead of waiting for one office to return your document before you start the next.

Update Social Security First

Your Social Security record has to change before anything else. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the IRS, and your employer all verify names against the Social Security database, so updates further down the chain will stall or bounce until the SSA has your new name. There is no fee.³

Depending on your situation, you may be able to start online through the SSA’s website. If online processing isn’t available, you’ll visit a local Social Security office or mail in your application.⁴ Either way, submit Form SS-5 with your certified marriage certificate and a valid photo ID such as your driver’s license or U.S. passport. The SSA requires original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. Regular photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted.⁵

If you mail your application, the SSA returns your original documents after processing. Keep any confirmation or receipt they give you. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet accepts SSA verification before your new physical card arrives.

Change Your Kentucky Driver’s License Within 10 Days

Once Social Security is updated, you can change the name on your Kentucky driver’s license or state ID. Kentucky law requires you to update your name within 10 days of the change.⁶ A duplicate credential costs $15.⁷

You can request the update in person at a Driver Licensing Regional Office or by mail. Bring:

Your current license or state ID.
Your certified marriage certificate (not the marriage license, but the certified certificate issued after recording).
Proof of the Social Security update. This can be your new Social Security card or a SSNAP verification form, which is accepted as long as at least 48 hours have passed since approval.⁶

The SSNAP option matters if you’re pressed for time. You don’t have to wait for the physical Social Security card to arrive; the verification form is enough. If you go in person, you receive a temporary document that day, and your permanent credential arrives by mail within 10 to 15 business days.⁶

Update Your U.S. Passport

How you update your passport depends on when it was issued. The State Department uses two tracks.

If your passport was issued less than one year before your legal name change, you can update it at no cost by mailing Form DS-5504 with your current passport, a certified copy of your marriage certificate, and a passport photo. Expedited processing adds $60.⁸

If more than a year has passed since your passport was issued or since your name was legally changed, you go through the standard renewal process. Most people can renew by mail using Form DS-82 if the current passport is undamaged, was issued when they were 16 or older, and was issued within the last 15 years. You’ll submit Form DS-82, your current passport, your marriage certificate, a passport photo, and the applicable fee. Check the State Department’s fee schedule for current amounts.⁹ If you don’t qualify for a mail renewal, you’ll apply in person using Form DS-11.⁸

Taxes and Your Employer

The IRS does not require a separate name-change notification. Once the SSA has your new name, IRS records follow. The rule is that the name on your tax return has to match the name the SSA has on file for your Social Security number.¹⁰

If tax season arrives before your SSA update is complete, file under your former name. Using a new married name on a return while the SSA still shows the old one can delay your refund or trigger processing errors. You can still choose “married filing jointly” whether or not the name change is finished.¹⁰

Tell your employer once Social Security reflects your new name. Payroll, tax withholding, and your Form I-9 all need updating. Federal rules require employers to record the new legal name in the Supplement B section of your existing I-9 and keep a copy of the supporting document, such as your marriage certificate, on file.¹¹ If your employer uses E-Verify, an SSA mismatch can trigger a discrepancy, so updating Social Security first avoids extra paperwork.

Vehicle Title and Registration

If you own a vehicle, update the name on your title. In Kentucky, bring your photo ID, your current title, and a supporting document like your marriage certificate to your county clerk’s office. The clerk will update the title.¹²

There isn’t a fixed deadline the way there is for your driver’s license, but a mismatch between the title and your ID can complicate a future sale or transfer, so it’s worth handling before you need to.

Travel Bookings and Trusted Traveler Programs

If you have flights booked under your former name and your ID now shows your new one, contact the airline before you travel. Airlines require the ticket name to match the ID. Showing up with a mismatch usually means additional screening and delays.

Update Global Entry and TSA PreCheck as well. Global Entry requires a passport in your new name before you can update the program; you can submit the change online through the CBP help portal or visit an enrollment center. TSA PreCheck members whose membership came through Global Entry will see the update carry over.

Everything Else

Once government records are settled, your new driver’s license and a certified marriage certificate are usually all you need for the rest. Work through:

Voter registration, which you can update online through the Kentucky Secretary of State. Do this before any upcoming election.
Bank and credit card accounts. Most banks handle the change in a branch visit with your new ID and certificate. Credit cards may be reissued.
Insurance policies, including health, auto, homeowner’s, and life, so claims process cleanly.
Mortgage or lease agreements. Contact your servicer or landlord to update the housing records.
Utility accounts.
Anywhere you receive mail or packages, even though USPS itself doesn’t require a name-change filing.

Keep one certified copy of your marriage certificate somewhere safe after everything is done. You may need it years later for insurance claims or estate paperwork.
