To change your name on a NY driver’s license, update your name with the Social Security Administration first, then submit Form MV-44 to the DMV along with proof of your new legal name and the $12.50 amendment fee. If you hold a Standard license, you can mail everything in. A REAL ID or Enhanced license requires an in-person visit so the DMV can take a new photo.
Update Social Security Before You Contact the DMV
The DMV verifies your name electronically against Social Security records when it processes your application. If the names don’t match, the transaction is rejected. A new Social Security card is free.
Give the federal database a few business days to catch up before you send anything to the DMV or book an appointment. Rushing in the same day risks a failed verification.
What You’ll Submit

By Mail or In Person

REAL ID and Enhanced holders have to go in. The DMV needs a new photo and has to see original identity documents. Book an appointment through the DMV’s online reservation system, and bring your MV-44, current license, original or certified proof of the name change, and the two residency documents. When Your New Card Arrives
Whether you applied by mail or in person, the DMV mails the permanent license to the address on file. Plan on two to three weeks.7New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Check License, Permit or Non-Driver ID Mailing Status If nothing has arrived after three weeks, check the mailing status on the DMV website or contact the agency. Once the new card arrives, destroy the temporary paper document.
Update Registration, Title, and Insurance Next
The license is not the last step. Your vehicle registration and title need to match. Bring Form MV-82, your current title or proof of ownership, your updated license, and the same name change proof. There’s no fee for a legal name change on registration documents or a certificate of title.8New York DMV. Call your insurer as soon as you have the new license. Voter registration takes care of itself. The 10-Day Deadline Is a Myth
You may run across claims that New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 505(5) gives you 10 days to notify the DMV of a name change. It doesn’t. Section 505(5) sets a 10-day deadline for a change of address.11New York State Senate. Updating promptly is still worthwhile, because a license showing your old name creates friction at traffic stops, airports, and anywhere else you need to prove who you are.
