Update Social Security First
Tennessee electronically verifies your name against Social Security Administration records at the counter. If your new name isn’t in the SSA database yet, the system flags a mismatch and the clerk cannot complete the update, no matter what paperwork you brought.
Go to your local SSA office with your name-change document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) and a completed Form SS-5. A replacement Social Security card is free. After the SSA processes the change, wait at least 24 to 48 hours before going to a Driver Services Center so the databases have time to sync. Going too soon is the most common reason people make a wasted trip.
Documents to Bring
Tennessee requires the original or a certified copy of the document that authorized your name change. Faxes and photocopies are not accepted.1Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Name Change
- Marriage certificate — the certified copy registered after the ceremony, not the marriage license issued beforehand. It must show your full name.
- Divorce decree — it must specifically grant restoration of a prior name. A decree without a name-restoration clause won’t work.
- Court order — for name changes granted by a Tennessee chancery or probate court, bring the signed order.
Bring your current Tennessee driver’s license as well. If it’s expired, lost, or stolen, you may need extra identity documents, so call the center ahead of time.
The Full Chain of Name-Change Documents
Since REAL ID enforcement began in May 2025, Tennessee requires every document that links your current name back to the name on your birth certificate or proof of citizenship.2Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. If You’ve Also Moved
When a name change coincides with a new address, Tennessee requires two separate proofs of residency from different sources. Each must show your name and physical address and be dated within the last four months. A state-run Driver Services Center is your main option. Some County Clerk offices also handle license transactions and charge an extra $4.00 administrative fee on top of the standard duplicate fee.4Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Appointments are available at select Driver Services Centers through the state’s online scheduling system. Arrive 15 minutes early; late arrivals may lose the appointment and be sent to the walk-in line.5Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. After You Leave the Counter
You’ll walk out with a temporary paper license that’s valid for driving while the permanent card is printed at a secure facility. Most cards arrive by mail within 10 to 20 days after the print date. If the post office returns the card for any reason, the full process can take up to 45 days.6State of Tennessee. Other Records to Update
The license is one piece. Letting other records lag behind your new legal name causes friction later, especially at tax time.
Federal taxes. The IRS matches the name on your return against SSA records, and a mismatch can delay your refund. File under the name that matches your current SSA record.7Internal Revenue Service. Update My Information
Auto insurance. Call your insurer to update the policy. They’ll typically ask for the same documents you took to the Driver Services Center.
Vehicle title and registration. Tennessee handles titles through County Clerk offices, not Driver Services Centers. Updating your driver’s license does not update your title. Contact your local County Clerk about the documents and fee for a corrected title.
Voter registration. A driver’s license application can serve as a simultaneous voter registration update under federal law,8Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act Of 1993 but don’t assume it happened. Verify your registration through the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office before the next election.
