Change Your Name With Social Security First

This is the step people skip, and it’s the one that will send you home. The NCDMV verifies your name through the Social Security Online Verification System. If Social Security still shows your old name, the NCDMV cannot process the change. Official guidance is to complete the Social Security update at least 36 hours before you visit a driver’s license office.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. To update Social Security, file Form SS-5 at your local SSA office with proof of your name change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, or certificate of naturalization) and proof of identity. Documents must be originals or certified copies from the issuing agency; photocopies won’t be accepted.4Social Security Administration. Learn What Documents You Will Need to Get a Social Security Card The new card arrives by mail in 5 to 10 business days, but you don’t need the physical card in hand to visit the NCDMV. You just need the 36-hour window to pass.5Social Security Administration. Change Name With Social Security

What to Bring to the NCDMV

Four categories of documentation. Miss one and you’ll be turned away.

Proof of the Name Change

Bring the original or a certified copy of the document that established your new legal name: a certified marriage license or certificate, a divorce decree, or a court order from the courts or Register of Deeds. Each must carry a raised seal or an ink stamp with the certifying official’s initials. Photocopies are not accepted.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Official NCDMV: NC REAL ID Requirements

Proof of Identity and Date of Birth

One document showing your full name and date of birth. Your current North Carolina driver’s license works. So does a certified U.S. birth certificate issued by a state Vital Records Office or county Register of Deeds, a valid unexpired U.S. passport, or a valid unexpired REAL ID from another compliant state.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Official NCDMV: NC REAL ID Requirements

Proof of Social Security Number

One document showing your full name and complete Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, a 1099, or a payroll record. The name on this document must match either your identity document or your name-change document.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Official NCDMV: NC REAL ID Requirements

Two Proofs of North Carolina Residency

Two documents showing your current physical address. Acceptable items include utility or cable bills, a North Carolina vehicle registration card, a housing lease or mortgage statement, a preprinted financial statement, property or income tax statements, school records, voter precinct cards, and documents from any North Carolina state, county, or city government or the federal government.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. If You’ve Changed Your Name More Than Once

For a REAL ID-compliant license, the NCDMV has to trace your name from your birth certificate or passport through every subsequent legal change to your current name. One certified document per link in the chain.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Official NCDMV: NC REAL ID Requirements

If you were born Jane Smith, became Jane Johnson by a first marriage, and became Jane Williams by a second marriage, you need both marriage certificates. A document showing only the most recent change isn’t enough. If an older marriage certificate or divorce decree has been lost, you’ll need to order a replacement from the county Register of Deeds or Vital Records office before your NCDMV visit.

At the Driver’s License Office

A name change on a license must be handled in person at an NCDMV driver’s license office. You cannot do it online, by mail, or at a license plate agency. Appointments can be booked up to seven days in advance through the NCDMV’s online system. After you book, a text or email confirmation link arrives, and you have 15 minutes to confirm or the appointment is cancelled automatically.7North Carolina Department of Transportation. At the counter, a representative reviews your documents and runs the Social Security verification that makes the 36-hour waiting period necessary. You complete a Driver License Application with your updated name, take a vision screening (20/40 acuity in one eye or both combined), and sit for a new photo.8North Carolina Department of Transportation. 19A NCAC 03B 0201 – Driver’s License Examination and Online Renewal Your license number, class, and expiration date stay the same.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. If Your Name Change Didn’t Come From a Marriage or Divorce

If your new name isn’t the result of a marriage or divorce, the NCDMV needs a court order before it can update your license. In North Carolina, that order comes from Superior Court and requires a 10-day Notice of Intent posting at the courthouse, a petition, two affidavits of good character from county residents, and FBI and State Bureau of Investigation background checks.11University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Guide to Changing Your Legal Name and/or Gender in North Carolina The posting can be waived with evidence that you’re a victim of domestic violence, a sexual offense, or stalking. Once the court grants the change, that order becomes the document you take to Social Security and then to the NCDMV.

If You’re Not a U.S. Citizen

Non-U.S. citizens need a valid unexpired foreign passport along with a valid unexpired U.S. visa and an I-94 Arrival/Departure Record in place of (or in addition to) a U.S. birth certificate.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Official NCDMV: NC REAL ID Requirements If the name change also affects your immigration documents, update those with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services before the NCDMV visit. USCIS requires evidence of the change, such as a court order or marriage certificate, and the return of the USCIS-issued document bearing your old name.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Don’t Let the 60 Days Slip

North Carolina law requires you to notify the NCDMV and obtain a duplicate license within 60 days of a name change.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 20 Motor Vehicles – 20-7.1 Notification of Change of Name or Address Beyond the deadline itself, a license that doesn’t match your Social Security record can cause friction at TSA checkpoints, during traffic stops, and whenever you use your license to verify identity for banking or employment. Handling it early also makes the rest of the paperwork, from passport updates to new accounts, easier to line up.
