How to Change Your Texas Driver’s License Address Online

You can change your Texas driver’s license address online through the state’s Texas by Texas (TxT) portal at texas.gov. The process takes about ten minutes, costs $11, and issues a printable temporary license as soon as you pay.¹ Your new card arrives by mail in about two to three weeks.² State law gives you 30 days from the date of the move to report it to the Department of Public Safety.³

Who Can Use the Online System

You qualify to change your address online if all of these are true:

Your license is valid, meaning not expired, suspended, revoked, or disqualified.
You hold a non-commercial license (Class C, Class M, Class CM, or a non-commercial Class A or B).
You are at least 18. Provisional and learner licenses do not qualify.
Your Social Security number is on file with DPS.⁴

One point that trips people up: the age-79 cutoff and the outstanding-warrants restriction apply to online renewals, not address changes.⁵ If you’re 80 with a valid license, you can still update your address online.

Commercial License Holders Have to Go In Person

If you hold a commercial driver’s license, you cannot change your address online or by mail. CDL holders must visit a DPS office in person because federal regulations require states to verify documentation for CDL transactions.⁴

Alternate-Address Program Participants

Judges, law enforcement officers, and others authorized to display an alternate address on their license are still bound by the 30-day rule when they move. You have to report the actual new residence to DPS and get a duplicate license, even though the card itself may continue to show the alternate address.⁶

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Gather these first so you don’t get stopped halfway through:

Your driver’s license number, printed on the front of the card.
Your audit number, the 20-digit string along the bottom of the license.
Your date of birth and last name exactly as they appear on the card.
The last four digits of your Social Security number.
A credit card for the $11 fee.¹
A printer, so you can print the temporary license the system generates.

The online system doesn’t ask you to upload proof of the new address. You just enter it.

The Address Has to Be a Physical Residence

Texas requires the license to display a residential street address. A P.O. Box will not work as your primary address, though you can add one as a mailing address if your residence doesn’t receive mail delivery. The physical address still has to appear on the license itself.⁶

Walking Through the Online Process

Go to texas.gov and navigate to the driver’s license services section, then select the address change option. The portal asks for your license number, date of birth, audit number, and the last four digits of your Social Security number to verify your identity.

Once your record loads, you’ll enter the new residential address. Read it back carefully before moving on. A typo means the new card either goes to the wrong place or gets printed with the wrong address, and fixing that means starting over.

The final step is paying the $11 fee by credit card.¹ Your expiration date does not change. This is a duplicate card, not a renewal.

Temporary License and Getting the New Card

As soon as payment goes through, the system generates a temporary license. Print it and carry it with your old physical card until the new one arrives. The temporary is valid identification showing your updated address in the meantime.

The new card typically arrives in two to three weeks.² If three weeks pass with nothing in the mailbox, check the status on the DPS website or email their customer service team.

The 30-Day Deadline and What Happens If You Miss It

Texas Transportation Code section 521.054 requires you to notify DPS within 30 days of moving.³ An outdated address on your license is a citable violation, though officers rarely stop someone specifically for that reason. It’s more likely to surface during a traffic stop for something else. If you do get cited, a court can dismiss the charge if you correct the address within 20 working days and pay a reimbursement fee of up to $20.⁷

If You Can’t Use the Online System

By Mail

Download form DL-64 (Application for Change of Address Certificate) from the DPS website, complete it, and mail it with the $11 fee to the address printed on the form. DPS accepts checks and money orders by mail.⁸ Processing is slower than online because of mail transit on both ends.

In Person

Bring a completed DL-64 to any DPS driver’s license office. In-person offices accept credit cards, cash, checks, and money orders.¹ This is the required route for CDL holders and the fallback for anyone whose license is expired or otherwise ineligible for the online option. Expect to hand over your old card at the counter.

Voter Registration Doesn’t Update Automatically

Changing your driver’s license address does not update your voter registration on its own. During the DPS online process you may be offered the option to register or update your voter information, but you have to actively select it.⁹ If you skip that prompt or aren’t sure it went through, you can update your registration separately at VoteTexas.gov.

Moving within the same county is straightforward. If you’ve moved to a different county, you have to re-register with the new county’s voter registrar, and handling it during the DPS address change is the simplest way to do both at once.
