Other Addresses To Update at the Same Time
Your driver license is one piece of a bigger list. A move inside Texas sets off several other address changes, and skipping them can cost more than the license fix itself.
Voter Registration
Federal law under the National Voter Registration Act treats an address change at a state motor vehicle office as a voter registration update too, unless you opt out on the form.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 52 USC 20504 – Simultaneous Application for Voter Registration and Application for Motor Vehicle Driver’s License13U.S. Department of Justice. Vehicle Registration
Vehicle registration is handled by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, a separate agency from DPS. Changing your driver license address does not update your vehicle registration. You can update the mailing address for your registration renewal notice through the TxDMV website using your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN. Changing the owner address on the title or the vehicle’s physical location requires a separate form. Online address changes take effect within two business days.
Auto Insurance
Your policy is tied to where you park the car overnight, which insurers call the garaging address. There is no grace period. If you move and file a claim before telling your insurer, the company could deny coverage based on the address mismatch. Call your insurance company on moving day or shortly after.
