How to Check FasTrak Violations: Online, Phone, and Penalties

To check FasTrak violations, go to the website of the California toll operator where you drove — bayareafastrak.org for Bay Area bridges and express lanes, thetollroads.com for Orange County toll roads 73, 133, 241, and 261, or 405expresslanes.com for the 405 Express Lanes — and enter your license plate number or the violation notice number from any letter you received. The lookup takes about two minutes and shows any unpaid tolls, penalties, and due dates tied to your vehicle. You can also call each operator directly if you’d rather not use the online portal.

What You Need Before You Look

One of two pieces of information is enough: the license plate number of the vehicle (with the state it’s registered in), or the violation notice number printed on any physical notice you’ve been mailed.¹

The plate search is the more useful option if you suspect you owe something but haven’t seen a notice. Mail runs late, addresses change, and a notice sitting in an old mailbox is still accruing penalties. If you already have a FasTrak account, your account number will help a phone representative pull up your records faster, but you don’t need it for an online check.

Checking Violations Online

California’s toll network runs on a single FasTrak transponder, but the violation systems are managed separately by regional operators. Pick the portal that matches where you drove.

Bay Area bridges and express lanes: go to bayareafastrak.org and choose “Pay an Invoice or Violation Notice.” Enter your plate or notice number to see any balance.²
Orange County toll roads (73, 133, 241, 261): visit thetollroads.com and open the violations section.
405 Express Lanes: visit 405expresslanes.com and enter the notice number along with your plate.¹

If you’re not sure which agency issued the toll, start with the Bay Area FasTrak site, which covers the most facilities. Out-of-state drivers can use the same portals; the plate search works regardless of where the vehicle is registered.

What the Penalty Amounts Look Like

When the lookup returns a number, that number depends on which facility you used and how many notices have gone out. Penalties escalate with each notice, and the caps differ by facility.

State-Owned Bay Area Bridges

The seven state-owned Bay Area bridges carry the lowest penalties. A first violation notice adds $5 per crossing on top of the unpaid toll. A second notice raises that to $15 per crossing, but drops back to $5 if you pay within 15 days of the second notice.⁵

Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate penalties run higher. The first notice adds $25 per crossing to the unpaid toll, and a second jumps to $50 per crossing. Paying within 15 days of the second notice reduces the penalty back to $25.⁵

Bay Area Express Lanes

A first express lane notice carries a $10 penalty if paid within 21 days. Miss that, and a second notice adds a $30 penalty, reducible to $10 if paid within 15 days of that second notice.⁵

Southern California Toll Roads

Orange County toll roads and express lanes follow the same pattern of escalation with each notice, but with different dollar amounts and deadlines. Check your notice or the relevant agency’s site for exact figures.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay

Ignoring a FasTrak violation doesn’t clear it. The consequences arrive in stages, and each stage is more expensive than the last.

The one most people run into first is a DMV registration hold. If you have unpaid toll violations on record, the DMV won’t renew your vehicle registration until they’re cleared with the issuing agency or paid along with your renewal fees.⁶ Driving on expired tags because a toll notice slipped past you compounds the problem.

Once unpaid penalties and fees exceed $400, the toll agency can file a civil judgment against you with the same force as any court judgment. That opens the door to wage garnishment and liens. The agency has to give you 30 days’ notice by mail before the judgment takes effect.⁷

The agency can also send your debt to a private collection agency, which tacks on its own fees.⁷

How to Dispute a Violation

If the lookup shows a violation you believe was issued in error, you can contest it. You have 21 days from the date a toll evasion notice is issued, or 30 days from the mailing of a delinquent notice, to file a dispute.⁸ Once those deadlines pass, your options shrink.

Online is fastest. On bayareafastrak.org, choose “Dispute a Violation,” enter your violation number, describe the reason, and upload supporting documents.² Common grounds that succeed include an incorrect plate read by the camera, a malfunctioning transponder, or documentation that you’d already sold the vehicle before the toll date. If the initial decision goes against you, you can request an administrative review by mail using the form the agency provides.⁵

First-Time Waivers and Payment Plans

If this is your first FasTrak violation, you can get the penalty waived by opening a FasTrak account before the payment due date on the notice. FasTrak deducts the unpaid toll from your new account and drops the penalty. The account start date can be backdated up to 30 days to cover the transaction that triggered the violation.² The toll itself is usually a few dollars; the penalties are what stack up, so this is worth doing.

Low-income drivers with significant violation debt may qualify for a payment plan. If your household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, you can request a plan that caps monthly payments at $25 for outstanding penalties of $600 or less.⁹ The total outstanding amount generally cannot exceed $2,500 for eligibility. Call 877-BAY-TOLL to request enrollment for Bay Area violations; you’ll need to bring income documentation to a customer service center in person.⁵

Violations on a Vehicle You Sold

Getting notices for trips you didn’t take usually means one thing: the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) never reached the DMV. Once the DMV processes an NRL, liability for later toll violations, parking tickets, and traffic tickets shifts to the buyer.¹⁰

You can file the NRL online through the DMV’s site or by mail. File it immediately after a sale, not weeks later. If violation notices have already arrived for post-sale tolls, file the NRL and then contact the toll agency with proof of the sale date to dispute the charges.

Buyers should check this from the other side. If you’re picking up a used car, look for outstanding toll violations that could trigger a registration hold, because every violation on record must be cleared before renewal regardless of who incurred it.⁶

Rental Cars and Toll Violations

Rental cars are a common source of unexpected FasTrak notices. Rental companies offer transponder add-ons, but the daily fees can outrun the tolls themselves. For a single Bay Area bridge crossing, FasTrak’s Short-Term License Plate Account lets you pay by entering the rental’s plate number online, covering crossings within the past 48 hours or up to 30 days ahead.¹¹

Two limits to note: the Short-Term License Plate Account works only for Bay Area bridge crossings, and it cannot be used for express lane tolls. Express lane trips in a rental require the rental company’s transponder or your own FasTrak tag.¹¹ Skipping the toll doesn’t help; the rental company will charge you the toll plus a processing fee, and if they don’t handle it, the violation returns to whoever the plate belongs to.
