How to Check Illinois Secretary of State Title Status

You can check your Illinois Secretary of State title status online for free using the Title and Registration Status Inquiry tool at apps.ilsos.gov/regstatus. All you need is the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Results appear instantly, and standard title applications take about three to four weeks to process after the Secretary of State receives them.¹

What You Need Before You Search

The tool asks for one thing: the Vehicle Identification Number. That’s a 17-character alphanumeric code unique to your vehicle. You’ll find it on the driver’s side dashboard where it meets the windshield, on the door jamb sticker, or on your insurance card and registration paperwork.

Check every character before you enter it. One wrong digit and the system returns no match. If you also have your Illinois title number from a prior title document or a registration renewal notice, hold onto it in case you need to call. The online tool itself only asks for the VIN.²

How to Run the Check

Go to apps.ilsos.gov/regstatus. The page is public, so no account or login is required. Enter the VIN, submit, and the system queries state records in real time. The whole thing takes under a minute.²

If you bought the vehicle from a dealer, remember that the dealer submits the title application on your behalf. Nothing shows up in the system until that submission reaches the Secretary of State, which can take a couple of weeks after the sale.³

What Each Status Result Means

The tool returns one of a handful of statuses that show where your title sits in the pipeline.

Pending. The office has your application and staff are reviewing it. The Title Division verifies lien information, confirms fees, and checks the paperwork for discrepancies. The current title fee is $165, and any payment or documentation error can stall the file here.⁴
Printed. Verification is complete and the certificate has been printed. If there’s a lienholder on file, the printed title may be sent to the lender rather than to you.
Mailed. The title has been dispatched to the address on record or to the lienholder. Most owners receive the physical document within seven to ten business days.
Record Not Found. Either the application hasn’t been entered yet or something doesn’t match. This is common in the first two weeks after submission because of manual data entry. It can also mean you typed the VIN wrong.

Standard processing runs about three to four weeks from when the office receives the paperwork.¹ If your status has been stuck on Pending well past that window, call the Secretary of State directly.

One boundary worth knowing: if your lender participates in the state’s Electronic Lien and Title program, the title is held electronically by the Secretary of State while your loan is active, and you won’t receive a paper title until the loan is paid off. The status you see may reflect that electronic hold rather than a mailing timeline.⁵

Title Brands You May See on the Record

The status inquiry can also surface a title brand, which is a permanent notation about the vehicle’s history. Brands affect resale value and insurability, so if you’re checking on a vehicle you just bought or are about to buy, an unexpected brand is worth pausing over. Illinois recognizes several under 625 ILCS 5/3-117.1:

Salvage. An insurer declared the vehicle a total loss because of collision, fire, theft, or other damage, or the cost to repair exceeded a set percentage of fair market value.⁶
Flood. Water rose over the door sill and entered the passenger or trunk compartment.⁶
Rebuilt. A previously salvaged vehicle has been repaired and inspected by a licensed rebuilder. The salvage history stays; the rebuilt designation is added on top.⁷
Junk. The vehicle is beyond repair and can only be used for parts. A junking certificate cannot be converted back to a regular title.⁷

How to Speed Things Up

If three to four weeks is too long, the Secretary of State offers expedited title service for $30 on top of the $165 title fee.⁸ It covers new titles, duplicates, corrections, and standard ownership changes. Out-of-state titles only qualify when submitted by a vehicle dealer.

Turnaround is quick. Requests received before noon ship via FedEx the same day; requests received after noon ship the next business day. Mailed expedited applications are treated as after-noon submissions and ship the day after the office receives them.⁸

Requesting a Duplicate If Yours Is Lost

Lost, stolen, or damaged titles can be replaced by filing the Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD 190) with the Secretary of State. The fee is $165, the same as a standard title, and you can submit by mail or in person at any Secretary of State facility.⁴ Once it’s in, track it the same way you’d track any title: with the VIN on the status inquiry page. If time is tight, add the $30 expedited fee.
