To check your NY pistol permit status, the route depends on where you applied. New York City applicants log into the NYPD’s online licensing portal. Everyone else contacts the county licensing authority that took the application, usually a county clerk, sheriff, or police department pistol license unit. Either way, the licensing officer has six months from the filing date to approve or deny, so that deadline is your main reference point when a case seems to be sitting.
Checking Status in New York City

If the portal isn’t cooperating or you have a question the dashboard doesn’t answer, you can call the License Division. Hold times can be long. Have your full legal name and date of birth ready, since staff need to verify who you are before releasing anything.

Outside the five boroughs, pistol permits are handled at the county level, and there is no uniform tracking system.3Westchester County Department of Public Safety. Pistol License Unit You have to contact the office that took your application.
In Nassau County, reach the Pistol License Section at (516) 573-7559 or pistols@pdcn.org.4Nassau County Police Department. In smaller upstate counties, start with the county clerk or the sheriff, depending on who handles permits there. Some counties, like Seneca, run everything through the sheriff’s pistol permit clerk.5Seneca County Sheriff. Pistol Permits – Seneca County Sheriff Others handle it through the court. When you call, give your full legal name and date of birth so the clerk can pull your file. The Six-Month Deadline
New York law requires the licensing officer to approve or deny your application within six months of the date you filed it.7New York State Senate. New York Penal Law 400.00 – Licensing and Other Provisions Relating to Firearms The officer has to accept the application when you present it, and the clock starts on that date.
There is one exception. The licensing officer can extend the timeline by sending you written notice that spells out the reasons for the delay, which the statute requires to be “good cause” tied to your application.7New York State Senate. New York Penal Law 400.00 – Licensing and Other Provisions Relating to Firearms In dense counties, applications frequently exceed six months and written delay notices are not unusual. If you’re near the six-month mark and haven’t received any written notice, mention that when you call for a status update.
Why an Application Can Sit for Months
A file that looks frozen is usually running through several background checks at once. The fingerprint-based criminal history check is the slowest piece, moving through both state and federal databases. New York also runs a separate mental health check against records of involuntary psychiatric commitments and reports filed under Mental Hygiene Law Section 9.46.8NYS Office of Mental Health. The automated mental health check returns results within 24 hours of the request, so that piece is rarely the bottleneck.9New York State Office of Mental Health. Most of the calendar time goes to the discretionary investigation: character references, interviews with people who know you, and any other factors the licensing officer wants to weigh. In counties with small staffs and heavy volumes, that’s where files back up.
Checking Recertification Status
If you already hold a permit and filed a recertification, that’s a different system. New York requires concealed carry permit holders to recertify every three years and premises-restricted permit holders every five.10Gun Safety NY. Pistol Permit Recertification Recertification runs through the State Police portal at firearms.troopers.ny.gov.
On that site, choose “Check Recertification Status.” You’ll need your New York State driver’s license or non-driver ID number. Out-of-state residents enter their home state’s ID number in the DMV Client ID field. Once the system issues a recertification number, your part is done.10Gun Safety NY. Pistol Permit Recertification
One boundary to know: if your permit was issued in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester, you do not recertify through the State Police. You follow the process your county has in place.10Gun Safety NY. Pistol Permit Recertification
If Your Status Update Is a Denial
A denial arrives as a written notice that lists the specific reasons the licensing officer refused the application.7New York State Senate.
