What You Need Before You Check
Have your filed return in front of you. The AZTaxes.gov refund tool asks for three pieces of information, and each must match the return exactly:1AZTaxes.gov. Where’s My Refund
- Your Social Security Number (or ITIN)
- Your filing status: Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Joint, or Married Filing Separate
- The zip code on your return
If you filed with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead of an SSN, the system accepts it in the same field.
Checking Online at AZTaxes.gov
AZTaxes.gov is the official state portal for individual tax services.2AZTaxes.gov. AZTaxes From the home page, choose “Check Refund Status” under the Individual menu, or go directly to the refund page. Enter your three fields and submit. The result screen shows where your return is in processing.
If the tool responds that it cannot provide a status, one of two things is usually happening. Either the information you entered does not match what ADOR has on file, or your return has not yet been loaded into the system. For paper returns, ADOR asks that you wait eight to ten weeks after filing before expecting a status to appear.1AZTaxes.gov. Where’s My Refund

How Long Arizona Refunds Are Currently Taking
Processing times shift with filing volume and are posted directly on the refund portal, refreshed weekly. As of the week ending February 20, 2026, ADOR reported these averages:1AZTaxes.gov. Where’s My Refund
- E-filed returns: 5 days
- Paper-filed returns: 17 days
Those numbers cover routine returns that don’t need extra review. Anything flagged for investigation takes longer. As a general guideline, ADOR asks paper filers to wait at least eight weeks from the filing date before calling about a missing refund.
Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive the money once ADOR issues it, because no mail delivery time is added. If you asked for a paper check, add postal transit on top of the processing figure above.
Why a Refund Might Be Delayed
A few situations commonly push a refund past the standard window:
- Math errors or missing information that require manual review.
- Identity verification. ADOR has increased fraud and identity theft screening in recent years, and flagged returns need extra steps before processing resumes.
- Refund offsets applied to outstanding debts (see below).
- Amended returns, which take significantly longer than original returns.
If the online tool still cannot provide a status more than eight weeks after you filed, call ADOR to ask what is holding up your return.
When Your Refund Goes to a Debt Instead
Arizona law lets ADOR apply your refund to certain outstanding debts through a process called a refund offset. Any tax you owe ADOR itself is satisfied first. After that, remaining funds can go to:5Arizona Department of Revenue. Outstanding Liabilities and Refund Offsets
- The IRS, for unpaid federal tax
- Delinquent child support
- State and municipal agencies you owe fees or bills
- Courts, for unpaid court-ordered obligations
When any portion of a refund is offset, ADOR mails an offset notice to your last known address identifying which agency received the money. If you disagree with the underlying debt, contact that agency. ADOR handles the offset itself but does not resolve disputes about whether you owe the debt.5Arizona Department of Revenue. The Portal Says My Refund Was Sent, but I Have Not Received It
What to do next depends on how you asked to be paid. For a direct deposit that never arrived, check the routing and account numbers on your return. If either is wrong, the bank rejects the deposit and ADOR generally reissues the money as a paper check, which adds several weeks.
For a paper check that has not shown up in a reasonable time after the portal reports it was issued, call ADOR at (602) 255-3381 to request a replacement.6Arizona Department of Revenue.
