How to Check Your CalFresh EBT Balance in California

To check your CalFresh EBT balance in California, call 1-877-328-9677, sign in to the ebtEDGE cardholder portal at ebt.ca.gov, open the ebtEDGE mobile app, or look at the bottom of your receipt after any purchase at a SNAP-authorized store. Each method shows your current available balance in real time, so pick whichever fits the moment.

By Phone

Calling 1-877-328-9677 is the quickest option when you don’t have internet access. The automated line runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Enter your EBT card number on the keypad, then your PIN, and the system reads your current balance back to you. The menu is offered in ten languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, and several others. Calls are free from a California landline; standard rates apply from a cell phone.

Online at ebtEDGE

The official web portal for California cardholders is ebt.ca.gov, run by FIS on behalf of the California Department of Social Services. First-time users create a User ID and password, then link the card by entering the card number and verifying identity. After that, you sign in with just the User ID and password. Your CalFresh balance appears on the main screen along with recent transactions and upcoming deposit dates.

One clarification worth making: BenefitsCal.com is not the same tool. BenefitsCal handles applications and case management and can show your general benefit amount, but CDSS directs cardholders to ebtEDGE for real-time card balance and transaction detail.

The ebtEDGE Mobile App

The ebtEDGE app is the only mobile app CDSS officially supports for managing an EBT account. It’s free on the Apple App Store and Google Play. CDSS warns against third-party EBT apps, which may charge fees or expose your account information. During setup you register with your name, email, and phone number, create a User ID and password, and link your card. From then on, your balance appears on the home screen as soon as the app opens.

The app also shows up to a year of transaction history, tells you when your next deposit will hit, lets you reset your PIN without a separate customer service call, and lets you freeze the card instantly if it’s lost or you suspect fraud. You can unfreeze it just as quickly. Built-in location tools help you find nearby SNAP retailers and ATMs.

On a Store Receipt

Every EBT purchase at a SNAP-authorized retailer prints your remaining CalFresh balance at the bottom of the receipt. If you shop regularly, this is the lowest-effort way to keep tabs on your funds. No phone call, no login, no app.

What You Need Before You Start

All four methods require your EBT card number, and every method except the receipt check requires your PIN. The card number is printed on the front of the card. The PIN is the code you chose when you activated it.

Forgot your PIN? Call 1-877-328-9677 and select a new one through the automated system, or visit your county social services office in person. You don’t need a new card unless you specifically ask for one.

When Your Benefits Are Deposited

CalFresh benefits post to your card on a set day each month based on the last digit of your county case number. A case number ending in 5 receives benefits on the 5th; a case number ending in 0 receives them on the 10th. The schedule runs from the 1st through the 10th. Your case number appears on correspondence from your county social services office. Checking your balance the day before your deposit date shows only what’s left from the previous month, not the new allotment.

Don’t Let Unused Benefits Expire

Benefits don’t stay on the card indefinitely. An account with no activity for 180 days is flagged as dormant, and after a full year of inactivity, remaining benefits are purged. Under federal rules tied to the 2018 Farm Bill, benefits unused for nine months are also subject to expungement. Any activity resets the clock, including a balance inquiry or a small purchase. If it’s been several months since you last touched the account, check the balance or use it soon.
