What You Need Before You Check
The Return Tracker asks for four items, all of which come directly off your MO-1040:
- Social Security number. The primary filer’s SSN as it appears on the return.
- Filing status. The exact category you selected (Single, Married Filing Combined, Married Filing Separate, Head of Household, or Qualifying Surviving Spouse).
- Refund or balance due amount. The whole-dollar figure from the return. Being off by a single dollar will cause the lookup to fail.
- Tax year. The year the return covers, not the year you filed it.
You’ll find all four on the first page of your MO-1040 or in the summary screen of your tax software.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri Return Tracker If you no longer have your copy, request a transcript from the Department of Revenue before trying the tracker.
When Your Return Will Show Up
Timing matters. If you e-filed, give the system five business days. If you mailed a paper return, expect three to four weeks before the tracker can find it.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Obtaining the Status of Your Tax Return Checking earlier than that usually returns a “not found” result, and it’s easy to assume something has gone wrong when nothing has.
What the Status Messages Mean
Once your return is in the system, the tracker displays a phrase describing where it sits. The common ones:
- Received and being processed. Nothing more to do; check back later.
- Additional information needed. The Department has questions and will contact you, or already has.
- Notice mailed. Processing is paused until you respond with the documentation the Department requested.
- Refund sent. Your refund has been released; a paper check will take longer to arrive than a direct deposit.
If the status shows a notice was mailed, don’t wait it out. Your refund stays frozen until the Department gets what it asked for, and the notice won’t resolve itself.
If the Tracker Can’t Find Your Return
Before assuming a problem, check the two most common causes. First, confirm you’re past the five-business-day (e-file) or three-to-four-week (paper) window. Second, verify every field you entered, especially the refund or balance due amount, which has to match to the dollar. Filing status also has to match exactly what’s on the return, not what you think you selected.
If the timing is right and your entries are correct, call 573-751-3505 to speak with the individual income tax division.
If You Filed With the Wrong Status
Sometimes checking your status is what tips you off that something’s off, often the filing status itself. Missouri ties your state filing status to the one you use federally: a joint federal return requires a combined Missouri return, and separate federal returns require separate state returns.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. To correct it, file an amended return. Missouri doesn’t use a separate amendment form; fill out a new MO-1040 for that tax year and check the box marking it as amended.5Missouri Department of Revenue. How Do I Correct a Mistake I Made on My Tax Filing Because the state status follows the federal one, you’ll usually need to amend the federal return first using IRS Form 1040-X, then file the corrected Missouri return.
You generally have three years from the date you filed the original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax (whichever is later), to submit an amended return claiming a refund.6Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Federal amendments typically take 8 to 12 weeks to process and can stretch to 16 weeks.7Internal Revenue Service. If the filing-status mistake caused you to underpay, the IRS can assess an accuracy-related penalty, though it may be waived if you can show reasonable cause and good faith.8Internal Revenue Service. Penalties The Department of Revenue has similar discretion at the state level and is generally more forgiving when taxpayers fix errors on their own rather than waiting for an audit.
