Check at a Store or ATM
Every purchase receipt from an EBT transaction prints your remaining balance at the bottom. If you want a check before you buy anything, ask the cashier to run a balance inquiry at the point-of-sale terminal. Most stores that accept EBT will do this at no charge.
For cash benefits, any ATM that accepts EBT cards will show your balance. Insert the card, enter your PIN, and select “balance inquiry.” Some ATMs charge a fee of a dollar or two for this, and the fee should appear on screen before you confirm so you can back out. Surcharge-free networks like Allpoint and MoneyPass waive fees for EBT at participating machines, and getting cash back during a purchase at stores like Walmart, Kroger, or Target is usually free.
If the Balance Looks Wrong
Before assuming something is off, check the calendar. Ohio loads SNAP benefits onto Direction Cards on a staggered schedule across the first 20 days of each month, and your deposit date depends on the last digit of your case number, landing on even-numbered days from the 2nd through the 20th.5Ohio.gov. Unused SNAP funds also carry over and stack on top of the next month’s deposit rather than expiring at month end.
If the total still doesn’t match your records and you think a transaction is wrong or unauthorized, you have 90 calendar days from the date of the transaction to report it to your county agency or customer service.
