Calling or Emailing SLED

SLED’s Regulatory Department takes status calls at 803-896-7015. Before you dial, pull up your CWP number and date of birth. Email to CWPquestions@sled.sc.gov works too, but replies are slower than a phone call. Mail inquiries are possible and not worth the wait for a simple status check.

What Your Status Label Means

Your renewal moves through several stages, and the label you see on the portal tells you where SLED is in the process.

  • Application Received. SLED has your submission in the system but hasn’t started working on it.
  • Processing or Under Review. Your background check is underway. SLED runs state and federal checks on every renewal.3South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Title 23 Chapter 31 – Section 23-31-215
  • Additional Information Required. SLED needs something from you: a document, a clarification, or a correction. Respond through the EasyPath portal or by mail so the review can continue.
  • Approved. Your renewal cleared the background check and a new permit card is on the way.
  • Denied. SLED rejected the renewal and will send a written explanation.

“Processing” is where most people sit longest. Background checks can stall when records from another jurisdiction don’t include complete disposition information, meaning a court or agency never reported the final outcome of an older case. When that happens, the FBI’s NICS team reaches out to verify eligibility, and that back-and-forth takes time.4Federal Bureau of Investigation. About NICS

If Your Status Has Been Pending More Than 90 Days

South Carolina law gives SLED 90 days from the date it receives your application to either issue the permit or issue a written denial. If neither happens inside that window, the permit is granted by operation of law.5South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Section 23-31-215 – Issuance of Permits So if your status has been stuck in Processing past 90 days and no denial letter has arrived, call 803-896-7015 and say so. SLED can still revoke a permit later on valid grounds, but the 90-day rule keeps the agency from sitting on your file indefinitely.

If Your Status Shows Denied

A denial notice comes in writing with SLED’s reason. You have 30 days from receiving it to file a written appeal with the Chief of SLED explaining why the denial was wrong. If the Chief upholds the denial, you can petition the Administrative Law Court within 30 days of that decision.3South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Title 23 Chapter 31 – Section 23-31-215 Both deadlines are strict. Miss either 30-day window and you lose that avenue to challenge the denial.

Why the Status Still Matters Under Constitutional Carry

Since South Carolina’s Constitutional Carry Act took effect on March 7, 2024, most adults can carry a concealed handgun inside the state without a permit.6South Carolina Legislature. 2023-2024 Bill 3594 – Constitutional Carry A common assumption is that a lapse during renewal processing doesn’t matter anymore. It does, for two reasons.

Reciprocity is the first. Roughly a dozen states honor a valid South Carolina CWP, and every reciprocity agreement requires a current permit. The day your permit expires, so does your ability to carry legally in those states, and no state honors a “renewal pending” status.

The second is a South Carolina sentencing enhancement: a person convicted of a crime involving a firearm who does not hold a valid CWP at the time can receive up to three additional years of consecutive prison time. There is no formal grace period keeping a permit “active” while a renewal is processing. Until SLED approves it and issues a new card, the permit is either still valid on its old expiration date or it’s expired. If your expiration is close and you have travel planned, watching your status daily is worth the two minutes it takes.
