Texas DPS runs two free online tools for checking your driver’s license status, and which one you want depends on the question you’re actually asking. If you applied or renewed recently and want to know where your card is, use the mailing status tracker. If you want to know whether your license is valid, suspended, or has unpaid reinstatement fees attached to it, use the License Eligibility system. Both take a couple of minutes.
Tracking a Card in the Mail
When you finish an application or renewal at a DPS office, you leave with a temporary paper license. The permanent card is printed at a central facility and mailed to the address on file, and it usually arrives in two to three weeks.1Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
To see where yours is in that pipeline, go to dps.texas.gov and open the “Where’s my license or ID?” tool. You’ll need your eight-digit driver’s license or ID number and your date of birth.2Texas Department of Public Safety. Checking Whether Your License Is Valid or Suspended
The mailing tracker won’t tell you anything about the state of your driving privileges. For that, use the License Eligibility system at texas.gov/licenseeligibility. It shows any outstanding requirements or fees tied to your license and lets you see your overall eligibility status.3Texas.gov. Welcome – Official Texas Driver License Eligibility System
Logging in takes your driver’s license or ID number, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.4Texas.gov. Welcome – Official Texas Driver License Eligibility System Once you’re in, you can view any reinstatement fees you owe on suspension offenses and pay them on the spot. You can also apply for an occupational driver’s license or an ignition interlock restricted license if you’re not currently eligible for a standard one.
If Your Card Has Not Arrived
Wait at least three weeks before treating it as a problem. During high-volume periods, production and mailing can stretch to four to six weeks.5Department of Public Safety. If the tool shows it was mailed but nothing reached you, the address on file is the usual culprit. Government-issued IDs typically cannot be forwarded through USPS, so a change of address filed only with the post office won’t redirect the card. Update your address with DPS directly.6USPS. A replacement card costs $11.7Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees You can order one online, but the system requires your audit number, the 20-digit number printed at the bottom of the front of your most recent physical card. Audit numbers change each time a new card is issued, and temporary paper licenses don’t carry one. If you never received the card and can’t produce an audit number, you’ll need to handle the replacement in person at a DPS office.

While You Wait: Your Temporary License
The temporary paper license is valid for driving for 60 days from the transaction date.9Department of Public Safety. Section 3 – Issuing a Temporary Permit Read the printed information before you leave the office; anything wrong on the temporary will be wrong on the permanent card too.
One thing the temporary will not do is get you through airport security. TSA does not accept temporary paper driver’s licenses as valid identification.10Transportation Security Administration. As of February 2026, travelers without acceptable ID can use TSA’s ConfirmID alternative verification process for a $45 fee.11Transportation Security Administration. TSA Introduces New $45 Fee Option for Travelers Without REAL ID Starting February 1 If your travel is flexible, the simplest fix is to avoid scheduling flights during the two to three weeks the card is in production.
Checking Your Card for the REAL ID Gold Star
Federal agencies began enforcing REAL ID for boarding commercial flights and entering federal buildings on May 7, 2025, with full enforcement across all federal agencies required by May 5, 2027.12Federal Register. A gold star means it’s compliant. No star means it isn’t, and you’ll either receive one automatically at your next renewal or you can request a replacement now by bringing the required identity, Social Security, and Texas residency documents to a DPS office.13Texas.gov.
