To claim unclaimed money in Utah, search your name for free at the state’s official portal, mycash.utah.gov, then file a claim with the State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division by uploading a photo ID, proof of your Social Security number, and evidence tying you to the address on file. The state holds these assets indefinitely under Utah’s Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, so there is no deadline to file. Straightforward claims move quickly; complex ones can take up to 90 days.1Utah Unclaimed Property. FAQs – Claims
Step 1: Search the State Database
Go to mycash.utah.gov and enter your full name or a business name.2Utah Unclaimed Property. What is Unclaimed Property? Results show each matching property with a unique ID and a general description of the source, which could be a dormant bank account, an uncashed paycheck, an insurance payout, a utility deposit, stock dividends, or the contents of a safe deposit box.3Utah Office of State Treasurer. Unclaimed Property
Try variations. Maiden names, former business names, and common misspellings all matter, because a slightly different spelling can hide a match. When you find your property, add it to the claim cart. This stages one or more items for a single claim submission and shows the reported value range before you start the paperwork.
Something recently dormant may not appear yet. Utah’s dormancy periods run from one year (wages, utility deposits) to fifteen years (traveler’s checks), with three years being the standard for bank accounts and insurance proceeds.4Utah Unclaimed Property. Reporting FAQs Until the holder’s dormancy period runs, the original bank, employer, or insurer still has the money — contact them directly.
If you’ve lived or worked in other states, run a second search at MissingMoney.com. It’s managed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators and covers most state databases in one query, at no cost.

If You’re the Original Owner
Provide proof that you lived at or received mail at the address listed in the state’s records.6Utah Unclaimed Property. FAQs – Evidence A driver’s license showing the matching address is the simplest option. Old utility bills, tax returns, or bank statements from that address work too. If your ID doesn’t match the address or you don’t have one, you can have the claim form notarized instead.
If You’re an Heir
You’ll need documentation of your relationship or right to claim, such as an obituary listing surviving heirs or court papers naming you as the estate representative.1Utah Unclaimed Property. FAQs – Claims If there was no valid will or trust, Utah’s intestate succession rules decide who can claim.
One requirement catches people off guard. When the total value of the deceased person’s estate exceeds $100,000, you must also submit a completed Affidavit for Collection of Unclaimed Property.6Utah Unclaimed Property. FAQs – Evidence

If Your Property Is a Safe Deposit Box
Contents from safe deposit boxes follow a different path than cash. Five years after the lease expires or goes unpaid, the box contents are presumed abandoned, inventoried and sealed by the holder, and eventually delivered to the state.8Legal Information Institute. Utah Admin Code R966-1-5 – Safe Deposit Boxes Utah can sell tangible property it receives and hold the cash in your name. If jewelry, coins, or heirlooms are what you’re after, search sooner rather than later so you can recover the items themselves instead of the sale proceeds.
Taxes on What You Recover
Getting your own money back is generally not a taxable event. A forgotten bank balance or uncashed paycheck was already taxed as income when you first earned it. Interest or dividends the property produced while it sat unclaimed may be taxable in the year you receive them.
Retirement accounts are the exception worth flagging. Under IRS Revenue Ruling 2018-17, the transfer of an unclaimed traditional IRA to a state’s unclaimed property fund is treated as a taxable distribution: the trustee withholds 10% for federal tax and issues a Form 1099-R to the account holder at the time of transfer, not when you claim the funds.9Internal Revenue Service. Revenue Ruling 2018-17 You may owe tax on a distribution you never actually received. If your search turns up an old IRA, check whether a 1099-R was filed in a prior year and consider talking to a tax professional before claiming.
Watch Out for Property Finders
You may get a letter from a company offering to recover unclaimed property for you in exchange for a cut. The state’s process is free, and it is designed for people to use on their own.
Utah law allows finders (also called locators) but limits them. Any agreement is void if the property has been in state custody for less than 24 months.10Utah Legislature. Utah Code 67-4a-1301 – When Agreement to Locate Property Enforceable After 24 months, fees are capped at 20% of the amount recovered.11Legal Information Institute. Utah Admin Code R966-1-37 – Finders A finder charging a contingent fee must also hold an active private detective license from the Utah Department of Public Safety.
A valid agreement must be in writing, signed by the owner, describe the property and services, and show the expected recovery both before and after the finder’s fee.10Utah Legislature. Utah Code 67-4a-1301 – When Agreement to Locate Property Enforceable Vague terms, a verbal-only pitch, or a fee above 20% are all warning signs. Fifteen minutes on the state database will almost always beat handing over a fifth of the money.
