To file for unemployment in Nevada, go to nui.nv.gov and submit a claim through Claimant Self Service (CSS), the online portal run by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).1Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation DETR. Claimant Self Service – Home You qualify if you earned enough wages during a recent 12-month base period, lost your job through no fault of your own, and are able and available to accept full-time work. Your weekly payment equals 4% of your highest-earning quarter, up to $469 per week in 2026, and benefits last up to 26 weeks within a 12-month benefit year.
Who Qualifies
Two things drive eligibility: what you earned and why you’re out of work.
Wages
DETR looks at a “base period,” which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. If your wages in that window fall short, Nevada may use an alternate base period covering your four most recently completed quarters.2Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Employer Handbook – Nevada Unemployment Compensation Program Under NRS 612.335, you must have earned at least $400 in your highest-paying quarter, and your total base period wages must equal at least 1.5 times that high quarter. So a $5,000 best quarter requires $7,500 in total base period earnings.
Reason for Separation
You need to have lost your job through no fault of your own. Layoffs, reductions in force, and position eliminations typically qualify. If you were fired for misconduct connected to your work, you’re ineligible starting the week you file, and you stay ineligible until you earn back your weekly benefit amount in new covered employment for a number of weeks the administrator sets, up to 15.3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 612.385 – Discharge for Misconduct
If you quit, you generally won’t qualify unless you can show good cause. NRS 612.380 governs voluntary separations, and the burden of proving good cause is on you. Unsafe conditions, significant changes to the terms of your employment, or documented harassment may qualify. Personal dislike of the job will not.
Ability and Availability
Every week you claim benefits, you must be physically and mentally able to work and available for full-time employment. There is a narrow exception for illness or disability that develops during an uninterrupted period of unemployment, provided no suitable work was offered before you became ill.4Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 612.375 – General Conditions; Reductions in Benefits You also have to register with EmployNV Hub and actively search for work.5Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. How Much You’ll Receive
Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is 1/25 of the wages you earned in your highest-earning quarter of the base period, capped by law each July.5Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Unemployment Insurance Claimant Handbook For 2026, the maximum is $469 and the minimum is $16. An $8,000 high quarter yields a $320 WBA. A $15,000 high quarter would calculate to $600, but the cap holds you at $469.
Benefits run up to 26 weeks within your 12-month benefit year. Your total available balance depends on your base period earnings, so a shorter work history or lower wages can exhaust your benefits before you reach the 26-week mark. When the Monetary Determination lands in your CSS account, check the numbers. That notice shows your WBA and total balance, but it isn’t a guarantee of payment. DETR still has to evaluate your separation and your ongoing eligibility.
What to Have Ready Before You File
Gather everything before opening the application. If you stop midway to hunt down an old employer’s address, the system can time you out and force a restart.
- Your Social Security number.
- Your Alien Registration number if you’re not a citizen. Benefits cannot be paid on wages earned without lawful work authorization.2Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Employer Handbook – Nevada Unemployment Compensation Program
- Employer information for the past 18 months: full legal business names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and your start and end dates at each job.
- The reason you left each of those employers. DETR uses this to decide whether your separation qualifies.
- Pay stubs or W-2s, so the gross earnings you report match what your employer reported. Conflicting wage data slows the process.
Be ready to verify your identity after you submit. DETR may ask you to upload a government-issued ID or complete a video verification through your CSS account.
Filing Your Claim Step by Step
Go to nui.nv.gov, create a CSS account, and work through the prompts. Answer the questions about your employment history and reason for separation using the information you gathered. When you finish, the system generates a confirmation number. Save it. That number is your proof of filing if anything goes wrong later.
If you don’t have internet access, DETR runs a Telephone Claim Center where an automated system walks you through the same process.6Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Unemployment Insurance Benefits
Once your claim is processed and your identity is verified, DETR posts the Monetary Determination to your CSS account. Almost every communication about your claim, including fact-finding requests, determinations, and appeal notices, comes through CSS rather than the mail.5Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Unemployment Insurance Claimant Handbook Log in regularly. Missing a fact-finding request because you were waiting for something in your mailbox is one of the most common ways people lose benefits they were otherwise entitled to.
Weekly Certifications and Work Search
Approval is only the start. To actually get paid, you have to complete a weekly certification every week without interruption. Each one covers a Sunday-through-Saturday period and asks whether you were able and available, whether you earned any income, and what job search activities you completed.5Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Unemployment Insurance Claimant Handbook
Nevada requires several different work search activities each week using methods customary to the occupation you’re pursuing. Keep a log with the date of each contact, the company, the person you spoke with, and the position you applied for. DETR can ask to see it at any time, and not having a log is treated the same as not having searched. Filing your claim automatically registers you with EmployNV Hub. If you live outside Nevada, register with your home state’s job service instead.
Missing a weekly certification doesn’t just delay payment. It can close your claim, and any weeks you skip are gone even if you reopen.
Part-Time Earnings and Severance Pay
Working part-time while you collect benefits is allowed, but it lowers your check. Nevada lets you earn up to 25% of your WBA before any deduction. Anything above that reduces your benefit dollar for dollar. With a $400 WBA, $100 in weekly earnings has no effect. Earn $250, and your benefit drops by $150 (the amount over $100), so you’d receive $250. Report all earnings on your certification, even amounts you think are too small to matter.
Severance pay works differently. Under NRS 612.420, you are disqualified from benefits for any week in which you receive severance pay or wages in lieu of notice.7Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 612.420 – Receipt of Wages in Lieu of Notice; Severance Pay A lump sum may only disqualify you for the week you receive it. Severance paid out weekly over several months disqualifies you for each of those weeks. If you’re negotiating a package, the payment structure directly affects when your unemployment can start.
If Your Claim Is Denied
A denial isn’t the end. You can file an appeal with the Appeals Tribunal within the deadline stated on your determination notice. Nevada allows 11 days from the mailing date of the determination to file a first-stage appeal. DETR then sends a Notice of Hearing with the date, time, and instructions. An Appeals Referee conducts the hearing under oath. If you quit, you have to prove good cause. If you were fired, the employer has to prove misconduct. Witnesses with firsthand knowledge count for more than written statements.8Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Unemployment Insurance Appeals
The Referee issues a written decision within 30 days of the hearing. If you disagree, you have 11 days from the mailing date to appeal to the Board of Review. Beyond that, judicial review is available through Nevada’s District Court.8Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Unemployment Insurance Appeals Keep filing weekly certifications the whole time you’re appealing. If you win, back payments only cover weeks you certified. Skip a week and you forfeit it, appeal outcome or not.
Taxes
Unemployment benefits are taxable at the federal level. Nevada has no state income tax, so federal is all you owe. Early the following year, DETR sends Form 1099-G showing the total paid to you, and you report it on Schedule 1, line 7, of Form 1040.9Internal Revenue Service. Unemployment Compensation You can ask DETR to withhold 10% of each payment, which spares you a surprise bill in April. If you skip withholding, set money aside yourself. Owing $500 or more can trigger estimated tax penalties, so quarterly estimated payments are worth considering if your benefits stretch across several months.
One last note on accuracy. If DETR pays you more than you were entitled to, you have to pay it back, and the state can intercept your federal tax refund through the Treasury Offset Program. Intentional misrepresentation under NRS 612.445 is treated as fraud and carries far heavier consequences, including a mandatory federal penalty of at least 15% on top of the overpayment.10Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 612.445 – Repayment of Benefits Report every dollar you earn, even the small amounts.
