A Victim Impact Panel in Georgia is a roughly two-hour session, run by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, where crash survivors describe how an impaired driver changed their lives. Georgia judges commonly order attendance as a condition of DUI probation. The in-person fee is $50, and you satisfy the requirement by registering with MADD, attending the full session with photo ID, and filing your certificate of completion with the court before your sentencing deadline.
Why You Were Ordered to Attend
Georgia’s DUI statute, O.C.G.A. § 40-6-391, lists the mandatory penalties for impaired driving: fines, jail time, community service, a DUI Risk Reduction Program, and a clinical evaluation. Victim Impact Panel attendance is not on that list.1Justia. Georgia Code 40-6-391 – Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Drugs, or Other Intoxicating Substances Judges add it separately using their authority under O.C.G.A. § 42-8-35, which allows the court to set reasonable terms of probation, including rehabilitative programming.2Justia. Many judges include VIP attendance in first-DUI sentences. For second or subsequent offenses, it’s almost universal. Check your sentencing order. It will state whether attendance is required and give you a deadline for completion, and that deadline matters because missing it counts as a probation violation.
Victim Impact Panel vs. Risk Reduction Program
People mix these two up constantly, and they are different obligations with different consequences.
The DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program is a state-mandated course you must complete within 120 days of conviction to get your driver’s license reinstated.1Justia. The Victim Impact Panel doesn’t affect your license. It satisfies a probation condition. Skipping it won’t keep you from driving, but it can land you back in front of the judge. Completing one does not satisfy the other. If your sentencing order lists both, you need both.
How to Register
MADD operates the only certified Victim Impact Panels in Georgia.4Mothers Against Drunk Driving. MADD Georgia Victim Impact Panel Guidelines Registration runs through MADD’s online portal. Register in advance. Online registration closes 24 hours before a weekend panel and by 11 a.m. on weekday panels. If you don’t have email access or hit a problem with the website, call the MADD Georgia office to register by phone.
Have your court papers in front of you so you can enter your case number and confirm the sentencing jurisdiction. Fill out your personal and contact information completely and accurately, because that data populates the certificate of completion. MADD will send an email confirming the registration went through.
The in-person panel is $50, plus a $3 convenience fee if you register online. If you pay at the door, MADD only accepts a money order made payable to MADD on site.4Mothers Against Drunk Driving. What to Bring and What to Expect
Bring a photo ID. MADD will not admit you without one. A driver’s license, passport, state ID, school ID, or even a store membership card with your photo on it will work.4Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Check-in and on-site registration open one hour before the start time. Show up during that window. If you arrive after the session begins, you will not be admitted and you will not get a refund. MADD also turns away, without refund, anyone who appears to have consumed alcohol or other substances before arrival.4Mothers Against Drunk Driving. MADD Georgia Victim Impact Panel Guidelines
The session runs about two hours. Victims and survivors of impaired-driving crashes speak about how a crash changed their lives and their families’ lives. They aren’t there to lecture the room. They tell their stories.5MADD Victim Impact Panel. Online MADD Victim Impact Panel The tone is serious, and you’re expected to stay respectful and engaged. The Online Option
If in-person panels aren’t offered near you, or you can’t realistically get to a scheduled session, you may be able to complete the requirement online. MADD’s online panel works on a smartphone, and the certificate is issued immediately when you finish.5MADD Victim Impact Panel. Confirm with your attorney or probation officer before you register online, and check whether your sentencing order specifies in-person attendance.
Filing Your Certificate With the Court
The certificate only counts once it’s in the court’s hands. Deliver it to your probation officer or file it directly with the Clerk of Court in the jurisdiction where your case is pending. Do this well before the deadline in your sentencing order, because court offices can take several business days to update their records, and a processing delay should not be what triggers a probation violation.
Keep a copy for yourself. Photograph the certificate or make a photocopy before handing over the original. Certificates get misplaced in court offices more often than you’d expect, and if yours goes missing and you can’t prove you attended, you may have to sit through the panel again. A week or two after filing, follow up with your attorney or the court clerk to confirm the system shows you in compliance.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
Skipping the panel or blowing past the deadline is a probation violation, and Georgia courts take those seriously. Under O.C.G.A. § 42-8-34.1, if the Victim Impact Panel was written into your sentencing order as a “special condition” of probation, the court can revoke your probation and send you to jail for up to the balance of your original sentence.6Justia. Georgia Code 42-8-34.1 – Revocation of Probated or Suspended Sentences If it was listed as a general probation condition rather than a special one, the judge can still impose up to two years of confinement or the balance of probation, whichever is less.
The math is straightforward. A $50 panel and two hours of your time, or the risk of serving time. Judges rarely show patience with someone who ignored a simple requirement, and once a revocation hearing is on the calendar, your leverage is mostly gone. If something genuinely prevents you from completing the panel on time, contact your attorney or probation officer before the deadline passes and ask for an extension. Asking in advance is a much better position than explaining yourself after the fact.
