Oklahoma Form 511 is the annual resident income tax return: you start with your federal adjusted gross income, apply Oklahoma-specific additions and subtractions, take the state’s standard or itemized deduction and personal exemptions, compute tax on the graduated rates, subtract credits, and file by April 15 either electronically through the Oklahoma Taxpayer Access Point or by mail to the Oklahoma Tax Commission.1Oklahoma Tax Commission. Who Has To File
You file as a full-year resident if Oklahoma was your domicile for the whole year. Anyone who spends more than seven months of the tax year in Oklahoma is presumed to be a resident unless they can prove otherwise.2Justia. Oklahoma Code 68-2353 – Definitions
A full-year resident must file Form 511 when gross income exceeds the threshold for their filing status. For the 2025 tax year:3Oklahoma Tax Commission. Individuals Income Tax
- Single: $7,350
- Married filing jointly: $14,700
- Head of household: $10,350
- Married filing separately: $7,350
- Qualifying surviving spouse with dependent child: $13,700
If someone else can claim you as a dependent, the threshold drops to $6,350 regardless of whether you are single or married.3Oklahoma Tax Commission. Individuals Income Tax These are Oklahoma amounts and sit below the federal figures, so a person who didn’t have to file federally can still owe an Oklahoma return.
One boundary worth flagging: active-duty servicemembers domiciled in another state don’t file as Oklahoma residents, and their spouses can be exempt from Oklahoma withholding under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act by filing Form OW-9-MSE with their employer.4Oklahoma Tax Commission. What To Gather Before You Start
Form 511 sits on top of your federal return, so finish the federal return first. Then pull together:
- Your completed federal return, since federal adjusted gross income is the starting point.
- W-2s from every employer, showing wages and any Oklahoma withholding.
- 1099 forms for interest, dividends, retirement distributions, freelance income, and other reported payments.
- Records of any Oklahoma estimated payments you made during the year.
- A copy of any other state’s return, if you earned income there and paid tax to that state.

Income and Oklahoma Adjustments
Enter your federal adjusted gross income on the designated line. Then apply the state’s additions and subtractions, which reconcile the places Oklahoma taxes income differently than the federal government does. A common addition is interest earned on bonds issued by other states. On the subtraction side, Oklahoma lets you subtract the full amount of Social Security benefits that were included in your federal adjusted gross income.3Oklahoma Tax Commission. Individuals Income Tax Other subtractions cover qualifying retirement income and certain disability payments. The instruction booklet walks through each line with its schedule references.5Oklahoma Tax Commission. 2025 Oklahoma Resident Individual Income Tax Packet
Deductions and Exemptions
Next, choose the Oklahoma standard deduction or Oklahoma itemized deductions, whichever gives you the larger number. The 2025 standard deduction amounts are:6Oklahoma Tax Commission. 2025 Oklahoma Individual Income Tax Forms and Instructions
- Single or married filing separately: $6,350
- Head of household: $9,350
- Married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse: $12,700
Itemizers complete Schedule 511-A. The categories track the federal ones (medical, state and local taxes paid, mortgage interest, charitable contributions) with modifications explained in the schedule instructions. Because Oklahoma’s standard deduction is well below the federal one, some people who take the federal standard deduction still come out ahead by itemizing on the state return.
After the deduction, subtract personal exemptions. Each qualifying exemption reduces taxable income by $1,000, and you can claim one for yourself, one for your spouse if filing jointly, and one for each dependent.5Oklahoma Tax Commission. 2025 Oklahoma Resident Individual Income Tax Packet
Tax and Credits
What remains is your Oklahoma taxable income. Apply the state’s graduated rates, which start at 0.25% and top out at 4.75%. If your taxable income is under $100,000, use the tax table in the instruction booklet; above that, use the tax computation worksheet.
Then reduce your base tax with any credits you qualify for. The most commonly used ones:5Oklahoma Tax Commission. 2025 Oklahoma Resident Individual Income Tax Packet
- Child care or child tax credit: if federal AGI is $100,000 or less, you can claim the greater of 20% of your federal child care credit or 5% of your federal child tax credit. Nothing is available above that AGI.
- Credit for taxes paid to another state: complete Form 511-TX and attach a copy of the other state’s return.
- Earned income credit: 5% of your federal earned income credit.
Adoption, volunteer firefighter, rehabilitation, and other credits go on Schedule 511-CR. Subtract total credits from base tax to get your final liability, then compare that against your withholding and estimated payments to see whether you owe or are due a refund.
How To File and Pay
The fastest route is electronic filing through the Oklahoma Taxpayer Access Point at oktap.tax.ok.gov. OkTAP accepts Form 511 and gives you immediate confirmation, and you can pay any balance from the same session.7Oklahoma Tax Commission. Help Center – OkTAP E-filers who also pay electronically get a slightly extended payment deadline of April 20 instead of April 15.8Oklahoma Tax Commission. 2025 Form 511-V Individual Income Tax Payment Voucher

After filing, track your refund with the “Where’s My Refund” tool on OkTAP.10Oklahoma Tax Commission. File Taxes E-filers can start checking about four business days after acceptance; paper filers should wait about three weeks. Once the return is processed, direct deposit typically reaches your bank in about five business days.
Deadline and Extensions
Form 511 is due April 15, matching the federal deadline, and slides to the next business day when the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday.11Oklahoma Tax Commission. Help Center
If you have an approved federal extension and owe no additional Oklahoma tax, the federal extension automatically extends your state due date. Attach a copy of the federal extension when you eventually file. If you owe Oklahoma tax or don’t have a federal extension, file Form 504-I to request a state extension.12Oklahoma Tax Commission. Application for Extension of Time to File an Oklahoma Income Tax Return
An extension only buys time to file, not time to pay. You must pay at least 90% of your total tax liability by the original April 15 deadline or you’ll owe a delinquency penalty. The maximum extension is six months for a 12-month tax year. Mail Form 504-I with any payment to P.O. Box 26890, Oklahoma City, OK 73126-0890, or make the extension payment through OkTAP and skip mailing the form entirely.12Oklahoma Tax Commission. Application for Extension of Time to File an Oklahoma Income Tax Return
Penalties and Interest
If less than 90% of your tax is paid by the original due date, Oklahoma charges a 5% delinquency penalty on the unpaid amount.13Oklahoma Tax Commission. Pay Taxes Interest then accrues at 1.25% per month, or 15% per year, until the balance is cleared.14Justia. Oklahoma Code 68-217 – Interest and Penalties on Delinquent Taxes – Interest on Refunds
Ignoring a written demand to file adds another 25% penalty on the assessed amount, and fraud triggers a 50% penalty on the entire deficiency.14Justia. Oklahoma Code 68-217 – Interest and Penalties on Delinquent Taxes – Interest on Refunds Underpayment of estimated tax carries its own 20% annual interest rate, calculated on each quarterly shortfall.13Oklahoma Tax Commission. Pay Taxes Paying at least 90% by April 15, even when you need an extension to finish the paperwork, keeps you clear of the delinquency penalty.
Fixing an Error After You File
Use Form 511X, the Amended Resident Individual Income Tax Return, to correct a return you’ve already submitted. You have three years from the date the tax, penalty, and interest were paid to file an amended return claiming a refund. For most filers, that clock starts on the original due date, because withholding and estimated payments are treated as paid on that date.11Oklahoma Tax Commission. Help Center
Redo Form 511 with the corrected numbers, then transfer both the original and corrected amounts onto Form 511X. Attach any schedules or supporting documents that changed. Mail the amended return to the same P.O. Box 26800 address used for original paper returns.
