The Eight-Hour Work Requirement

You must have worked for pay as a nurse aide for at least eight hours during your current two-year certification period, performing nurse aide duties under the supervision of a licensed or registered nurse.2Prometric. Without those paid hours, you can’t renew and will eventually need to retake the state competency exam.

Your employer verifies the hours as part of the online process. When you submit through TMU, the system routes the request to the employer you pick, and that employer approves or denies the hours.3D&S Diversified Technologies. • Sign in at nm.tmutest.com with your email or username and password. Use the “Forgot Your Password?” link if you can’t get in.
  • Look for the message that you have certifications eligible for renewal and click through. If it doesn’t appear, click the “Employment” button at the top of the page.
  • On the Renewal Letters page, click “Click here to submit Employment Renewal,” then “ADD EMPLOYMENT RENEWAL.”
  • Choose “Nurse Aide” as the certification type, pick your employer from the drop-down list, and enter your employment start and end dates.
  • Pay by credit card and click “Pay Now.” If your employer is covering the fee, choose “Sponsor Payment” and click “Create.” If the employer is a state-funded facility, select that employer and click “Create” — no fee is charged.

Once submitted, the request goes to your employer for approval. You can log back into TMU or search the public registry to see whether it’s been processed.

When To Renew and the Grace Period

You can file the renewal starting 30 days before your expiration date, and the state allows a 30-day grace period after expiration.1New Mexico Health Care Authority. Don’t treat the grace period as extra time. If your employer is slow to approve or TMU throws an error, those days disappear fast. A few weeks of lead time is the safest bet.

The $25 Fee

The standard renewal fee is $25, paid by credit card inside the portal.1New Mexico Health Care Authority. Certified Nurse Aide Registry Some employers pay through the “Sponsor Payment” option. Checking That It Went Through

After your employer approves the request, your updated certification and new expiration date post to the public registry. Search for your record at nm.tmutest.com using your name, Social Security number, or certificate number.4NM TMU. New Mexico Registry Search No paper certificate is mailed; the registry entry is the official record, and that’s what employers check before hiring.

If You Miss the Grace Period

Miss both your expiration date and the 30-day grace period, and your certification lapses. At that point you have to retake the state competency exam, which includes a written portion and a clinical skills demonstration, to get back on the registry.1New Mexico Health Care Authority. If your certification has been lapsed for more than 24 months, the Health Care Authority offers a Reactivation by Exam Waiver pathway through a separate TMU application.
