To complete the PA State Grant Form, file the FAFSA first, wait for PHEAA to email you an activation link for its GrantUs portal, set up your account, and then fill out the form from your Action Items dashboard before your filing deadline. The whole process runs online through PHEAA’s GrantUs system, and the form itself only becomes available after your FAFSA data has been received and screened.1PHEAA. Before You Start
The PA State Grant Form pulls foundational data from your FAFSA, but PHEAA often asks for more detail to calculate your award under its state-specific formula. Pull these together before you log in:
- Social Security numbers for the student and any parent whose information appears on the FAFSA.
- Your 2024 federal income tax return (or tax information from the IRS), including adjusted gross income, if you are applying for 2026–27.2PHEAA. PA State Grant Program FAQ
- Records of untaxed income such as child support received, workers’ compensation, or contributions to retirement accounts.
- Asset information including the net worth of investments and businesses. Your primary home’s value is excluded from FAFSA asset calculations.
- Household size and school enrollment details for anyone in your family attending college.
Names and Social Security numbers need to match your official government records exactly. A middle initial on one form and a full middle name on another can trigger processing flags and delay your award.
Step 1: File the FAFSA
Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at studentaid.gov. For the 2026–27 academic year, that means using your 2024 tax information. List at least one Pennsylvania school on the FAFSA so PHEAA receives your data. Nothing happens on the state side until your federal application reaches the agency.3Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Apply or Renew
Step 2: Watch for Your Activation Email
After PHEAA receives and processes your FAFSA data, it runs an initial eligibility screening. If you pass, PHEAA sends an account activation email to the same address you used on the FAFSA. The activation link is time-sensitive, so use it as soon as it arrives. If you already have a GrantUs account from a prior year, no new email goes out. Sign in with your existing credentials instead.1PHEAA. PA State Grant and Special Programs Modernization Project
Parents or contributors who provided information on your FAFSA may also hear from PHEAA for additional data. Each person involved — student, parent, and spouse if applicable — needs their own individual email address to access GrantUs.1PHEAA. PA State Grant and Special Programs Modernization Project
Step 3: Set Up Your GrantUs Account
Click the link in the activation email, set a password, and enable multifactor authentication. You can verify your identity through email or through text message if a phone number is associated with your account.3Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Apply or Renew
Step 4: Fill Out the PA State Grant Form
Once you sign in, go to your Action Items dashboard. First-time applicants will see two forms waiting: the PA State Grant Form and the High School Form. Complete both. Work through the form using the records you gathered, confirming that the figures line up with what you reported on the FAFSA and with your 2024 tax documents.3Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Apply or Renew
Submit from inside GrantUs when you finish. The dashboard will show the form as completed, and any additional items PHEAA needs from you will appear there.
Deadlines for Submission
Your FAFSA deadline is what drives the PA State Grant Form timeline, because the form only opens to you after PHEAA receives your FAFSA data. Two deadlines apply:3Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Apply or Renew
- May 1: renewal applicants, and first-time applicants enrolling in a degree or college-transferable program at a four-year university, two-year private college, or similar institution.
- August 1: first-time applicants enrolling in a community college, a designated Pennsylvania open-admission institution, a business or trade school, a hospital school of nursing, or a two-year non-transferable program.
Missing your deadline usually means losing funding for that academic year. PHEAA may still consider late applications in limited situations: recently discharged veterans, and families that experienced a significant loss of income after January 1 due to a parent’s death, disability, retirement, unemployment, divorce, or separation. The agency may also accept late filings when extenuating circumstances prevented timely submission.2PHEAA. PA State Grant Program FAQ
After You Submit
PHEAA processes applications over several weeks. Sign in to GrantUs and watch your dashboard for status updates. If your application is selected for an eligibility review, you will receive a request for additional documentation. You have 30 days to respond. Missing that window can delay your funds, trigger further requests, cancel your award, or require repayment of money already sent to your school.2PHEAA. PA State Grant Program FAQ
There is a hard cutoff built into the review process. PHEAA will not accept review documentation after April 1 of the current academic year. For 2026–27 awards, that puts the absolute last date for documentation at April 1, 2027. If a review request is dated after March 1, you still must contact PHEAA within 30 days regardless.2PHEAA. Renewal Applicants
If you received the PA State Grant last year, filing the FAFSA by the May 1 renewal deadline is usually enough. Renewal applicants typically do not need to complete the PA State Grant Form or High School Form again. Sign in to your existing GrantUs account and check your Action Items dashboard anyway. PHEAA will email you if anything extra is required, and the dashboard is where any requested item will show up.3Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Apply or Renew
Residency Pitfall to Avoid
One rule catches students off guard after they submit. If you are a Pennsylvania resident attending college in another state and you register to vote in that state, you lose your PA State Grant eligibility. Pennsylvania military personnel stationed outside the state generally keep their eligibility, as long as the family has not taken steps to establish residency elsewhere.
Pennsylvania residents attending approved out-of-state schools can still receive a grant, but the maximum drops considerably: $600 per year if the school is in a state with a reciprocal agreement with Pennsylvania, or $800 per year if you qualify as a veteran of the U.S. armed forces.4PHEAA. Prepare
