To change your major as a UTSA undergraduate, submit the online UTSA Change of Major form, a Qualtrics questionnaire hosted on the university’s advising website. Most requests are processed within five business days.1UT San Antonio Advising. Change of Major Request Before you open it, confirm you’ve already attended your academic advising appointment at New Student Orientation. UTSA will not accept the form from students who haven’t completed that step.
Who Can Use the Form
Two conditions apply to every request. You have to be a currently enrolled UTSA undergraduate, and you have to have attended your New Student Orientation advising appointment. The advising page tells students who haven’t done so not to submit.1UT San Antonio Advising. Change of Major Request
Two situations fall outside this form. If you want to switch into a 100% online degree program rather than a residential major, request an advising appointment with the UTSA Online Degree advisor instead, and submit that request at least 14 business days before the start of the upcoming fall or spring semester.1UT San Antonio Advising. Change of Major Request And if you only want to add or change a minor, concentration, or specialization, contact your assigned academic advisor directly. The Change of Major Request covers major changes.
What You Need Before You Open the Form
Have your myUTSA ID ready. That’s the three-letter, three-number code (like abc123) you use to log into university systems.2UT San Antonio One Stop. myUTSA ID You’ll also enter your current college and major, and the exact name of the major you want to switch into. Use the name as it appears in the official online UTSA Undergraduate Catalog.3The University of Texas at San Antonio. The form link lives on the Change of Major Request page on UTSA’s advising site. For residential majors, no advisor meeting is required before you submit, though you can book one through the Advisor Appointment Request Form if you want to talk through options first.1UT San Antonio Advising. Check Your Target College’s Requirements First
Not every major is open to every student. Each college sets its own entry standards, and advising will check them before approving your request. If you don’t meet them, the request is denied, so look up the receiving college’s rules in the undergraduate catalog before you submit.
At the Carlos Alvarez College of Business, students moving into any B.B.A. major or the B.S. in Economics need a 2.0 UTSA GPA and must have completed MAT 1053 (or an approved equivalent or higher-level math course) with a grade of C- or better.4The University of Texas at San Antonio. Carlos Alvarez College of Business
Engineering programs in the Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design require a C- or better in every science, engineering, and mathematics course that serves as a prerequisite to required coursework. Any course below a C- must be repeated. Gateway courses must be passed with a C- or better in no more than two attempts, and all required math, science, and engineering courses must be completed with a C- or better in no more than three attempts.5The University of Texas at San Antonio. Other colleges have their own benchmarks. Check the relevant catalog section before submitting.
If You Already Have 75 or More Credit Hours
Students who have earned 75 or more semester credit hours face an extra step. Instead of the Qualtrics form alone, you file the Student Petition for Change of Major after 75 Semester Credit Hours, a PDF available through UTSA’s advising office.6The University of Texas at San Antonio. Student Petition for Change of Major after 75 Semester Credit Hours The petition applies whether you’re requesting a replacement major, an additional major, an additional minor, or a new concentration or certificate.
On the form you list your current degree type, major, minor, and any concentration or certificate, plus the total credit hours earned and remaining. You provide the same information for the program you want to move into: degree type, major, and credit hours earned and remaining on the new path. You sign the petition and list your expected graduation date.
After your signature, three reviewers look at it. Your academic advisor evaluates whether the change would push you past 150 total credit hours and whether it extends your time to graduation. An assistant or associate dean in the receiving college then approves, denies, or conditionally approves the request. The Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies gives final authorization, again with the option to attach conditions.6The University of Texas at San Antonio. Watch the Semester Deadline
UTSA sets a deadline each semester for change-of-major requests to take effect that term. For Fall 2026:
- 16-week and first 8-week terms: August 5, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. CT
- Second 8-week term, for students enrolled only in that term: October 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. CT
Requests submitted after the deadline may not take effect until the following semester.7UTSA. After You Submit
Allow five business days for processing. UTSA sends a notification to your UTSA email. If nothing arrives after five business days, check your spam folder before contacting the Academic Advising Director.1UT San Antonio Advising. Change of Major Request

How a Late Switch Can Affect Your Tuition
Changing majors late in your college career can push your total attempted credit hours into surcharge territory. Texas public universities, including UTSA, assess a tuition surcharge on undergraduate resident students whose attempted hours exceed the required hours for their degree by 30 semester credit hours, for students who first enrolled in fall 2006 or later.10The University of Texas at San Antonio. Undergraduate Credit Limitation (the 150-hour rule) Past that threshold, you pay an additional charge per credit hour on top of standard tuition.
The 75-hour petition exists partly to flag this before you commit. Your advisor calculates whether the new major’s remaining requirements would push you past 150 total hours, the common trigger point for a 120-hour degree. If it would, the petition notes that fact for the dean and the Associate Vice Provost, who may deny the request or approve it with conditions designed to keep you on a tighter graduation timeline.6The University of Texas at San Antonio. Student Petition for Change of Major after 75 Semester Credit Hours Switching early, before you’ve stacked hours in a program you’re leaving, avoids most of these complications.
