  • Your full legal name as printed on the current license or ID
  • Date of birth
  • License or ID card number
  • The old address currently on your record
  • Your new residential address, which must be a physical location and not a P.O. box

The 30-Day Deadline

Section 1407 gives you 30 days from the move (or a name change) to notify the Secretary of State in writing.2Maine State Legislature. Maine Code Title 29-A Section 1407 – Change of Location or Status The requirement applies to anyone who has applied for or received a driver’s license or vehicle registration. Missing it can result in a traffic infraction. Put the date on a calendar when you sign the lease or close on the house.

Include Your Vehicle Registration

The 30-day rule covers vehicle registrations under the same Section 1407 framework, so handle both in one contact.5Maine State Legislature. Maine Code Title 29-A – Registration Required When you reach the BMV about your license, mention that you also need the registration updated. If you have more than one vehicle, provide each registration number so they can all be corrected in a single transaction.

What Arrives After You Submit

The address update produces a new license or ID card, not a sticker on your existing one. Most requests are fulfilled in under two weeks, though the BMV advises allowing up to three weeks for delivery. A temporary credential is valid for 60 days, which covers you in the interim.6Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Voter Registration Updates Automatically

Under the National Voter Registration Act, an address change filed with a state motor vehicle agency doubles as a voter registration update unless you specifically opt out.7The United States Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA) Maine is required to forward your new address to election officials. If you handle the change by phone or email rather than a formal application, confirm with the BMV representative that your voter registration will be updated, or call your municipal clerk to make sure you’re enrolled at the right polling place before the next election.

Other Agencies to Tell Separately
