To change the address on your Alabama driver’s license, complete the Alabama change of address form DL-99 and send it to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The form is a single-page PDF on ALEA’s website, there is no fee, and Alabama law gives you 30 days from your move to report the new address.1Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. What the Form Asks For
DL-99 takes a few minutes if you have your information ready. You’ll need:
- Your full legal name as it appears on your current Alabama license or ID card
- Your Alabama driver’s license or ID number and date of birth
- Your new residential address, including street, apartment number, city, county, state, and ZIP code
- A separate mailing address if you use one (such as a P.O. Box)
- A daytime phone number and, if you’d like renewal reminders, an email address
The form does not ask for your prior residential address. The only “old address” field is in the voter registration section, and it asks for the address where you last registered to vote.1Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Alabama Driver License or Identification Card Change of Address
The Voter Registration Decision
DL-99 doubles as a voter registration update. If you do nothing, submitting the form will move your voter registration to your new address automatically. To keep that from happening, check the opt-out box on the form.1Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Alabama Driver License or Identification Card Change of Address
If you include the voter update, sign both signature lines on the form. The second signature is a declaration under penalty of perjury that you are a U.S. citizen, an Alabama resident, at least 18 by Election Day, and not disqualified by a felony conviction or a court finding of mental incompetence.1Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. How to Submit Form DL-99
By Mail
Print the form, fill it out, sign the appropriate line or lines, and mail it to:

Montgomery, AL 36102-14711Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Alabama Driver License or Identification Card Change of Address
Mailed forms are processed by hand, so expect a longer turnaround than the online option. There is no fee.
Online
You can also submit an address change through ALEA’s online portal at alabamadl.alea.gov. Electronic submissions typically post to the system faster than mailed forms, and you’ll get an on-screen confirmation. Log back in later if you want to verify that the change took effect.
Your Physical Card Will Not Change
Filing DL-99 updates ALEA’s database. It does not produce a new license or ID card, and ALEA will not send one automatically. Your existing card will keep showing the old address.1Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Alabama Driver License or Identification Card Change of Address
If you want a card that shows the new address, you have to buy a duplicate. The replacement fee is $36.25, payable at a local probate or licensing office or at an ALEA Driver License Office.2Houston County, Alabama. Driver License – Probate The duplicate is optional. Once the database reflects your current address, you’ve met the 30-day reporting requirement, and many people simply wait until their next renewal for a card with the new address.
If You Have a STAR ID
Getting a duplicate STAR ID means bringing two documents that prove your new residential address. Accepted items include a current lease or mortgage contract, a utility bill dated within the last 90 days, a vehicle registration in your name, a homeowner’s insurance policy, or prior-year tax returns showing the address. Originals only; photocopies are not accepted.3Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. What DL-99 Does Not Cover
Vehicle registration is handled by the Alabama Department of Revenue, not ALEA, so filing DL-99 does not change the address on your tag or title.4Alabama Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle If you moved within the same county, some counties let you update the address during tag renewal through ALTagRenewals. If you moved to a different county, you’ll need to re-tag the vehicle in your new county, and the cost depends on local ad valorem taxes, so contact the new county’s tag office for its requirements.5ALTagRenewals. Frequently Asked Questions
DL-99 is also only for people who already hold an Alabama license or ID card. If you’re moving to Alabama from another state, you have 30 days after establishing residency to get an Alabama license, you’ll need to surrender your out-of-state license, and you have to apply in person at an ALEA Driver License Office rather than by mail or online.6Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
