Mississippi Form 78-026 is the Fast Track Application for Replacement Certificate of Title, filed with the Mississippi Department of Revenue when your original title has been lost, stolen, damaged, or never received. Fast Track or Standard Replacement

Mississippi offers two separate replacement forms. Form 78-026 is the $39.00 Fast Track version with the 72-hour processing guarantee. Form 78-006 is the standard version at $9.00, and mail-in applications through that route can take four to eight weeks.

The $39.00 Fast Track fee combines the base $9.00 title fee under Mississippi Code 63-21-63 with a $30.00 expedited-processing charge authorized by Mississippi Code 63-21-15.2Justia. Filling Out the Form

Vehicle Information

The top section asks for four things: the Vehicle Identification Number, the make (manufacturer), the year, and your existing title number.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Application for Replacement Certificate of Title Model and license plate number aren’t required.

Copy the seventeen-character VIN exactly as it appears on the metal plate visible through the base of your windshield or on the label inside the driver’s door jamb. One transposed digit will bounce the application. If you don’t have your title number, check old registration receipts or ask your County Tax Collector’s office to look it up.

Owner Information and Signatures

Enter your name, address, city, state, and zip code exactly as they appear in the Department of Revenue’s records. Under Mississippi Code 63-21-27, the owner named on the existing title record, or the first lienholder if there is one, is the person who applies for the replacement.4Justia. Mississippi Code 63-21-27 – Replacement of Lost, Stolen, Mutilated or Destroyed Certificates If two people are listed as owners, both must sign.

Reason for Replacement

Check one of the boxes explaining why you need a replacement: lost, never received from the Department, mutilated or destroyed or illegible, stolen, never received from the lienholder, or other.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Application for Replacement Certificate of Title

How Liens Affect Where the Title Goes

If a lienholder appears on the Department of Revenue’s records for your vehicle, the replacement title is mailed to that lienholder, not to you.4Justia. Mississippi Code 63-21-27 – Replacement of Lost, Stolen, Mutilated or Destroyed Certificates You won’t hold the physical title until the loan is paid and the lien is released. That mirrors how the original was handled.

If you’ve paid off the loan but the state’s system still shows an active lien, include a signed lien release from the lender with your application. Without it, the Department will treat the lien as active and route the new title to the lienholder.5Mississippi Department of Revenue. Instructions and Tips on Replacement Title Request If the lender has gone out of business or changed names, tracking down the release is still your responsibility; try the successor institution or the lender’s state regulator.

The form itself does not have fields for lienholder name and address. The Department pulls that information from its own database. Your job is either to include a valid lien release, if the loan is paid, or to leave the lien in place, if you’re still making payments.

Processing Time

The 72-hour processing clock starts when the Department has your completed application, supporting documents, and payment in hand, and it excludes weekends and holidays.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. After the Replacement Is Issued

Once the Department issues the replacement certificate, your original title is automatically void. The replacement carries a legend noting it is a replacement certificate and may be subject to the rights of a person under the original.4Justia. If Your Vehicle Was Titled in Another State

Form 78-026 only replaces Mississippi-issued titles. If your vehicle was last titled in another state and you’ve since moved to Mississippi, you’ll need to apply for a replacement through the issuing state’s process. Once you have that replacement in hand, take it to your local Mississippi County Tax Collector’s office to apply for a new Mississippi title and registration. Skipping the out-of-state replacement will stall at the counter, because Mississippi needs a valid title document to transfer the record into its system.
