How to Complete the Ole Miss Permission to Transfer Credit Form

If you are currently enrolled at the University of Mississippi and want a course taken somewhere else to count toward your degree, you need to submit the Ole Miss Permission to Transfer Credit form and get written approval from your academic dean before you enroll in that outside course. There is no single universal form on the registrar’s site. Each college and school within the university handles its own version, and skipping this step can cost you both the tuition you paid elsewhere and the credit you were hoping to earn.

Where to Get the Form

The central listing of every college-specific form lives on the College and School Forms page maintained by the Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience.1University of Mississippi. College and School Forms From there, follow the link for your school:

  • College of Liberal Arts students download the PDF from the linked Box file and email the completed form to libartsadvising@olemiss.edu.1University of Mississippi. College and School Forms
  • School of Business Administration students submit through the Transfer Credit Google Form linked on the school’s advising page. Any 300-level or higher business course also requires a current syllabus with the submission.2School of Business Administration. Other Forms
  • Students in other colleges should check the central forms page for their school’s link. Submission may be a PDF download, a Google Form, or an in-person stop at the advising office.1University of Mississippi. College and School Forms

Whichever version you use, submit it and wait for written approval before you register for the outside course. Courses taken without prior approval may be rejected even if the subject matter aligns perfectly with an Ole Miss class.

Check the Transfer Equivalency Database First

Before filling anything out, look up the course you are planning to take in the Transfer Equivalency lookup tool on the registrar’s website. The database shows which courses at other institutions have already been matched to Ole Miss courses, with coverage through Summer 2026.3The University of Mississippi. Transfer Equivalencies

A match in the database usually speeds up review because evaluators do not have to work through a new syllabus from scratch. It also tells you exactly which Ole Miss course the outside class will satisfy. A listing is not the same as final approval, though. You still need the form and your dean’s sign-off.2School of Business Administration. Other Forms If no equivalency exists, be ready to submit a detailed course description or full syllabus so evaluators can judge content, level, and credit hours.

What to Include on the Form

Every college’s version asks for the same core information. Pull these together before you start:

  • Your student ID number and declared major, which routes the request to the right department.
  • The external institution’s name. The school must be regionally accredited, for example by SACSCOC or an equivalent regional accreditor. Courses from unaccredited institutions will not transfer.4University of Mississippi. Transfer Policy for Undergraduate Courses
  • The department, course number, and full title of the outside course.
  • The specific Ole Miss course you believe it should satisfy. Use the equivalency database to identify this.
  • A syllabus or course description. Required when no equivalency exists in the database, and always required for upper-division business courses.2School of Business Administration. Other Forms

Residency and Credit Limits to Check Before You Apply

Several caps on outside credit can block an otherwise valid request. Review them before you commit to taking a course elsewhere.

Overall Residency

At least 25 percent of the credit hours required for your degree must be completed at the University of Mississippi. For a standard 120-hour degree, that means a minimum of 30 hours of Ole Miss-delivered instruction.5University of Mississippi. Last 21 Hours

At least 12 of your final 21 credit hours must be taken in residence at Ole Miss, meaning no more than 9 of those last 21 hours can be transfer credit.5University of Mississippi. 62-Hour Transfer Cap

No more than 62 credit hours of transfer credit from all sources combined can count toward a degree. If you brought in a large block of community college credit when you first enrolled, you may have less room left than you think.

Business Degree Limits

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration face tighter rules. Only half of the BBA degree requirements may come from a junior or community college, 30 hours of business coursework must be completed at Ole Miss, and any 300-level or higher business course will only be approved from an institution with AACSB accreditation.2School of Business Administration. How Approval Works and How Long It Takes

Once you submit the form with any supporting documents, your college’s advising office reviews the request. In some schools the office handles the entire review internally; in others the form routes through the relevant academic department before the dean signs off.2School of Business Administration. Processing times vary. Plan on one to two weeks during busy periods like summer and early fall registration, and submit well before the external school’s enrollment deadline. If you register for the outside course before the written approval comes back, you are accepting the risk that the credit will not transfer. Written approval on file before you sit down in the other classroom is the only guarantee the university offers.

Grade Minimums and GPA Impact

The lowest grade that will transfer to Ole Miss is a D. Individual departments and degree programs can set a higher bar, and many require a C or better for the course to satisfy a specific major requirement. Ask your advisor what your program expects before you assume a low passing grade will do.

Grades from transferred courses are factored into your cumulative GPA as the university calculates it.6University of Mississippi. Transfer Students Treat the outside course with the same seriousness as an on-campus section, because a weak grade will follow you.

After You Finish the Course

Earning the grade is only half the job. The credit will not land on your Ole Miss transcript automatically.

Order an official transcript from the external institution and have it sent directly to the University of Mississippi’s Office of the Registrar. Most schools use electronic transcript services like Parchment or the National Student Clearinghouse, though some still require a paper request. Transcript fees at the sending school typically run between $8 and $20. For study-abroad coursework, Ole Miss charges a $250-per-transcript processing fee on its end.

Your academic record will not update until the official transcript arrives and the registrar confirms both the grade and the approval already on file. Do not wait until the following semester to request the transcript. Delays can affect your enrollment status, financial aid calculations, and ability to register for courses that list the transferred class as a prerequisite. When the Transfer Equivalency card in your Experience portal shows the new credit, the process is complete.3The University of Mississippi. Transfer Equivalencies
