What to Have Ready
Whether you file online or on paper, pull the following together first:
- Your full legal name exactly as it appears on your current Oregon license, permit, or ID card.
- Your date of birth.
- Your Oregon driver license or ID number (one letter followed by six or seven digits, for example A1234567).
- Your previous address and your new residential and mailing addresses, with street, city, and ZIP.
- For each vehicle you own: the plate number and the full 17-character VIN.
Print clearly on the paper form. A misread digit on a license number or VIN can send the update to the wrong record or bounce it back.

One Notice Covers Your License and Your Vehicles
You do not need to file separately for your driver license and your vehicle registration. Do You Need a New License or ID Card?
Changing your address does not produce a new plastic card. The updated address lives in DMV’s electronic records; your physical card still shows the old one. Oregon stopped issuing address stickers in January 2020 under House Bill 57, so labeling the back is not an option. 3Oregon Department of Transportation. A replacement card is optional. If you want one that shows your current address, order it through DMV2U or visit a local DMV office. Voter Registration Updates Automatically
Under Oregon’s Motor Voter Act, updating your address with DMV automatically updates your voter registration, unless you specifically decline. Penalty for Missing the 30-Day Deadline
Failing to notify DMV within 30 days is a Class D traffic violation under ORS 807.560 for license and permit holders, and under ORS 807.420 for ID card holders. 6Oregon State Legislature. Oregon Code 153.018 – Maximum Fines An outdated address also means you can miss renewal notices, court summons, or registration correspondence, and agencies will not treat a missed letter as an excuse.
Other Records to Update After You Move
The DMV notice does not reach every account tied to your address. Your auto insurance carrier is the most urgent call: ZIP code is a major factor in how premiums are calculated, and driving with the wrong address on your policy can give the insurer grounds to deny a claim. Update your garaging location as soon as you move.
If you hold a professional license issued by an Oregon state board (nursing, real estate, cosmetology, and so on), most boards require you to report an address change within 30 days as well. Check with the specific board for its process.
